Fort Ebey

Overview

Fort Ebey State Park offers a unique blend of coastal forest and military history on the western shores of Whidbey Island. Originally established as a World War II coastal defense fort, the park now serves as a serene getaway for travelers seeking a rugged, natural atmosphere. Visitors are greeted by towering Douglas firs and sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains across the water, making it a quintessential Pacific Northwest destination. The park provides a quiet, reflective environment where the sounds of the forest meet the salt air of the Puget Sound.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of the historic town of Coupeville, the park occupies a prime position within the Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve. The surrounding landscape features a mix of dense woodlands and high seaside bluffs. Because of its location on the rain shadow side of the Olympics, the park often enjoys drier weather than other parts of western Washington. This coastal setting provides a dramatic backdrop where bluff-top trails overlook the Strait of Juan de Fuca, offering some of the best sunset views in the region.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a variety of sites, including several with water and electric hookups suitable for smaller to mid-sized RVs. While the park maintains a rustic feel, guests have access to essential facilities including restrooms and showers. The park’s crown jewel is its extensive network of 28 miles of multi-use trails, which are highly regarded by mountain bikers and hikers for their technical variety and scenic overlooks. For history enthusiasts, the well-preserved gun battery serves as a fascinating landmark to explore during your stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park’s historic gun battery, visitors can easily explore the charming wharf and boutiques in downtown Coupeville. A short drive south leads to Fort Casey State Park, home to the Admiralty Head Lighthouse and sprawling parade grounds. For those looking for more adventure, the iconic bridges and rugged cliffs of Deception Pass State Park are located just a short distance to the north, providing world-class sightseeing and beach combing opportunities that are easily accessible from your home base at Fort Ebey.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for active outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize trail access and natural beauty over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect match for history buffs interested in military heritage and photographers looking for dramatic vistas of the Pacific coastline. While it accommodates many travelers, the park is best suited for small to medium RVs due to the winding park roads and forested site footprints, providing an intimate and peaceful connection with the wilder side of Whidbey Island.

Awesome campground. New favorite state park to camp at in Washington for sure. The camp host while we were there (8/10-14) kind of sucked though. Her smoke detector was broken and kept beeping. She insisted it still worked fine, but she didn't want to take it down because that wouldn't be safe, and assured us that she was going to go into town the next day to get a new one. That was after our first night there and she never fixed it. Luckily a breeze picked up for the rest of our stay and she was far enough away from us (we were at site 8 and she was all the way on the other side of the bathroom) that the sound of the wind in the trees and the ringing of the buoy down in the sea covered the beeping. That was just irritating, but not the fault of the park and we never bothered to complain to either of the rangers so who knows if it could have been actually resolved by a camper with more courage to complain. I definitely want to come back here. There was so much to do in the park as well as close by. We had a day exploring the battery, and a short drive to the Price Sculpture Forest, one day was beach day, and another we spent in Coupeville being tourists. Great spots to view the sunset every evening too. If you have a kid who loves planes, this is definitely the place to be. But if you hate hearing planes, maybe don't go here because he army jets fly over frequently and can be so loud that you have to stop conversation until they pass by. I didn't mind that at all though.

From the second we drove in it was magical. My daughter & I saw a river otter run across the beach from the tide pools to the wooded area. Saw a deer & a bald eagle landed right near me and then flew past my daughter, also lots of robins. It was magic, plus some pretty rocks.

This place is beautiful. If you like the outdoors this place is a must. -It has a camp site settled into a gorgeous spot in the woods. -There is drive up beach access. Panoramic ocean views and old forts to explore. -There are also running trails that let you see ocean views one moment and deep forests the next. I highly recommend. You will have to spend $10 on parking so don't forget to do that unless you have a WA State park pass.
