Fort Massac

Overview

Fort Massac State Park holds the distinction of being the first state park in Illinois, offering travelers a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty. Situated along the scenic Ohio River, the park encompasses over 1,450 acres of lush landscape. Visitors are drawn to the reconstructed 1802 American fort, which serves as a centerpiece for educational programs and historical reenactments. Whether you are a history buff or a nature lover, the park provides a peaceful environment that honors the region's frontier past while offering modern recreational opportunities.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the southern tip of Illinois in Metropolis, the park occupies a strategic position overlooking the Ohio River. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands, providing a serene backdrop for RVers. Its proximity to the Kentucky border makes it an ideal stop for those traveling through the Midwest or exploring the Shawnee National Forest nearby. The riverfront setting offers expansive views and a cooling breeze, making the park’s campsites feel tucked away from the bustle of the city while remaining easily accessible.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Fort Massac features 50 Class A campsites equipped with electricity, including several sites that accommodate 50-amp service. While the sites are primarily electric-only, a convenient dump station and fresh water fill-up are available for all guests. The park provides well-maintained shower facilities and restrooms, ensuring comfort during your stay. For recreation within the grounds, travelers can enjoy a challenging disc golf course, multiple picnic shelters, and a boat ramp that provides direct access to the river for fishing and boating enthusiasts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just outside the park gates, the town of Metropolis offers a quirky adventure as the official Home of Superman, featuring a massive statue and a dedicated museum. Cyclists and hikers will appreciate the George Rogers Clark Discovery Trail, a paved path that connects the park to the city’s riverfront. For those willing to drive a bit further, the dramatic rock formations of the Garden of the Gods are within reach. Additionally, the park hosts the annual Fort Massac Encampment, a massive event that brings the 18th century to life with authentic period crafts and music.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for history enthusiasts who want to camp where legends once walked. It is also a fantastic choice for families seeking an educational yet active vacation, thanks to the onsite playground and historical exhibits. Because of its spacious sites and quiet atmosphere, it serves as a perfect riverside retreat for retirees or solo travelers looking to unwind. Camped here 3 nights. Baths were clean, showers need curtains. All my stuff got wet. Close to shopping and the Ohio river. Nice people.

Beautiful setting, even with river barges. The VC employee was extremely helpful in answering questions. She also ran outside to catch me when she found a brochure that seemed like something I'd want to know about.

When we first arrived, there were only two other campers and there is lots of space in between each campsite. The restrooms and showers were new and nice. They were horseflies surrounding us when we first arrived, but they disappeared in about 20 minutes. This campground is located adjacent to the Ohio river, which seemed to have a lot of dead fish and a terrible smell this time of year. $20 a night was a deal.

Very nice Illinois State Park. Cool forts that you can walk around and see. Right on the Ohio River. Beautiful scenery. Ample parking, very nice visitors center and bathrooms.

Great little museum, Fort replicas, Bike trails, walking trails, and alo NH the beautiful Ohio River. This is not a big hiking area but perfect for families wanting small trails. They have a great little campground and the visitors center has events at times and can give you any info. There are some great photo ops through the park
