Fort Parker

Overview

Fort Parker State Park provides a serene and historically significant escape nestled between the major hubs of Dallas and Houston. Established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park centers around the expansive Fort Parker Lake and the tranquil Navasota River. It serves as a beautiful blend of Texas history and natural preservation, offering a quiet retreat for those wanting to immerse themselves in the unique Limestone County landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Mexia, Texas, the park sits within a transition zone between the Blackland Prairie and Post Oak Savannah ecosystems. Visitors will find scenic waterfront views and winding riverbanks shaded by mature oak and pecan trees. The surrounding area is primarily rural and agricultural, which ensures a peaceful atmosphere and a dark-sky environment that is absolutely perfect for stargazing far away from modern city lights.

Amenities & Park Features

The RV-friendly campsites at Fort Parker offer reliable water and 30/50-amp electrical hookups to accommodate a variety of rig sizes. The park features several dedicated facilities for visitors:

  • Spacious sites with picnic tables and fire rings for outdoor dining.
  • Access to clean restrooms and hot showers located near the camping loops.
  • A convenient dump station for RV waste management.
  • A large activity center available for group gatherings and events.

These features ensure a comfortable stay while maintaining the rustic charm of a state park environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the extensive Fort Parker Lake trail system, which offers over five miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and wildlife observation. It's a smallish park but very nice. Sunset over the lake was beautiful! We enjoyed kayaking on the navasota River and the hiking trails. The actual roads could use some TLC. They are crumbling and unfortunately I twisted my ankle and fell while walking on the road. The rangers were all super friendly. We stayed in cabin 1 and it was nice and clean. The bathrooms, though in need of some repair, were also nice and clean. My son loved swinging from the thick woody vines along the trails and wants to go back 😀

It is a smaller park and is somewhat rundown. But the lake is gorgeous and the staff is friendly. We stayed in screened shelter #005 during the Texas winter and they had winterized the windows which was really nice cuz the first night was in the low 40's so with the heater we brought, we were comfortable enough. The shelter itself was one of the cleanest I've seen in the many Texas State Parks we been to but the area just outside was very uneven and a bit precarious and even more treacherous after dark as there were no outside lights or lantern hooks.

Very cool park with a few trails. There is also a cool kayaking trail that I would definitely come back to try! Staff was nice and overall the park is known for fishing!

Friendly park rangers who were always a call away. The park itself had wonderful trails and hikes. The sheltered area we stayed at was clean and well kept. The restrooms and shower areas were clean and taken cared of daily. The only thing that was a bummer was having all the piers closed but they did have it disclosed on their website.

We are doing the great State Park challenge! So far, we have visited 4 out of 89- and Fort Parker was top tier as far as trails, history and water recreation goes. So many great adventures await you at this non assuming, small town State Park. Highly recommend planning a day or even a weekend and going! 🏞🥾🐟🕊
