Fort Richardson State Historical Park

Overview

Fort Richardson State Historical Park offers a unique blend of Texas frontier history and outdoor recreation. Located in Jacksboro, this site preserves an 1860s military post while providing modern camping facilities for today’s travelers. Visitors can explore restored historic buildings and enjoy the scenic North Texas landscape. It serves as a peaceful destination for those looking to combine a bit of education with a traditional camping experience under the wide Texas sky.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the rolling hills of North Texas, the park is easily accessible via Highway 281. The surrounding area is characterized by Post Oak savannah and rugged terrain, typical of the Cross Timbers ecoregion. The park sits adjacent to the city of Jacksboro, offering a sense of seclusion without being too far from local conveniences. The nearby Lost Creek Reservoir adds a refreshing water element to the otherwise dry, wooded landscape surrounding the campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters well to RVers with a variety of site types, including several options with full hookups and others offering water and 30/50-amp electricity. The sites are generally level and provide a comfortable amount of space between neighbors for a more private experience. On-site facilities include clean restrooms, hot showers, and a central dump station for convenience. For recreation, the park features the 10-mile Lost Creek State Trail, which is perfect for hiking, biking, or equestrian use.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

History buffs will enjoy guided tours of the original fort hospital, barracks, and officers' quarters. Outdoor enthusiasts can head to the designated swimming beach or fish for bass and catfish in the reservoir. Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the small-town charm of Jacksboro or take a short drive to see other regional landmarks. The extensive trail system is also a major draw for mountain bikers seeking a scenic and moderately challenging ride through the brush.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and history enthusiasts who appreciate learning about the Old West in an authentic, preserved setting. It is also a fantastic choice for nature lovers seeking a quiet retreat for birdwatching or trail exploration. While it lacks the high-end amenities of a luxury resort, its rustic charm and educational value make it a standout choice for travelers who prefer a slower pace and meaningful, historic surroundings.

The landscape is beautiful. The fort is okay. We stayed in a cabin and that was a good price. The bathroom was kind of far but not unrealistic walking distance.

Great Stay at Fort Richardson State Park and Historic Site We had a wonderful time at Fort Richardson State Park and Historic Site. We stayed at Site #6, which was clean, level, and easy to access. The park itself is peaceful, well maintained, and full of history, with plenty of areas to explore and learn from. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the historic buildings added a unique touch to the visit. A great place to camp, hike, and experience a bit of Texas history — we’ll definitely be back!

We stayed in a cabin. They are small but can easily sleep 6. There are RV and primitive camping sites. Ice and firewood are avaliable at the check in station. There is a swimming area but you have to go to the north park on the lake. It is a short drive, just a few miles. There are RV and camping sites at the north park. The old fort buildings are very interesting and worth seeing. There is an old rock quarry that is no a stocked fishing pond next to the check in station.

Stayed in the cabins, explored the trails, explored the building, and attended a Dutch oven cooking class. I do recommend it! Don’t forget to go to the north park and swim at the lake which was very quiet and relaxing park!

Excellent park! Best showers we had ever seen at a state park! Just wish the bathrooms had more illumination. We only did one short trail and it was great as some parts of it were in the shade. Excellent exhibit, so thankful for such great historical place is being so well taken care of, great job, y'all!!!!
