Fort Tuthill (Coconino County Park)
Overview
Fort Tuthill County Park offers a quintessential mountain escape within the vast Ponderosa Pine forest of Northern Arizona. Managed by Coconino County, this park serves as a versatile recreation hub that balances its historic military roots with modern outdoor leisure. It is widely recognized for its cool summer temperatures and peaceful atmosphere, providing a refreshing alternative to the desert heat found in southern parts of the state. Travelers often visit to reconnect with nature while staying close to the cultural heart of Flagstaff.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just south of downtown Flagstaff, the park is easily accessible via Interstate 17 and Highway 89A. The campground is nestled at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet, surrounded by the towering trees of the Coconino National Forest. This high-altitude setting ensures that visitors enjoy crisp mountain air and a distinct four-season environment where the sound of wind through the pines replaces the noise of city traffic. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides a variety of sites, ranging from rustic tent spots to RV-friendly spaces. While the park maintains a natural feel, it offers a convenient dump station and potable water for guests to refill their tanks. Each site typically includes a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. On-site facilities also include clean restrooms and access to the park’s extensive trail system, which is popular for both hiking and mountain biking throughout the warmer months.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers will appreciate the Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course, located directly within the park boundaries. For those interested in local culture, the Pepsi Amphitheater hosts various concerts and festivals during the summer season. Beyond the park, travelers can explore the historic charm of downtown Flagstaff, visit the world-renowned Lowell Observatory, or take a scenic drive to the Grand Canyon National Park, which is located less than ninety minutes away from the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize natural beauty and trail access over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a central base to explore Northern Arizona and for RVers who enjoy a traditional camping experience under a canopy of trees. If you appreciate a quiet, woodsy setting with easy access to urban conveniences like local breweries and dining, Fort Tuthill is a perfect fit for your travel style.

Pretty awesome place for smaller kids who just want to play in the snow and sled. And it's big! There's a people there but doesn't feel crowded. And there's a bathroom, so 👍🏽

Vantastic regional park with all the bells and whistles. Fairgrounds, adventure park, disc golf and hiking trails are just a few of the amenities. Great parking and plenty of picnic areas. 3 bars of Verizon 5G roaming.

We came for snow park and had a blast. It was on a Saturday night from 4 to 8 and it was perfect. They had manicure lanes all lit up. We went after snowfall so there was plenty of snow to keep all the lanes open. No line as it was night time.

The ropes course was closed so didn't get to try it but walking around the area looked super fun and decently long. Walking by the bike hills and course for biking looked really cool and could be a blast. I'm not sure if the volleyball area and the squash game area count as the park portion but those seemed to not be taken care of and are just there.

I thought I’d stop in since I hadn’t been here in many many years and I was really impressed. The Bike park is amazing. Everything from kindergarten through a full college education of crazy bumps and launch ramps for awesome stunts to be performed here. It’s really nice to to see what has been accomplished here. Rules were pretty simple and the way they should be. Be careful and use it your own risk.
