Foster Park
Overview
Foster Park offers a quintessential Old California atmosphere, serving as a tranquil haven within the Ventura River Valley. Managed by Ventura County, this park provides a refreshing alternative to the crowded coastal campgrounds typically found along the Pacific. Travelers are greeted by a landscape characterized by its rugged beauty and a sense of history, making it a peaceful retreat for those who appreciate a slower pace of life under the canopy of ancient trees.
Location & Surroundings
Positioned conveniently between the vibrant city of Ventura and the artistic enclave of Ojai, the park is nestled along the banks of the Ventura River. The surroundings are lush and green, featuring a dense population of mature sycamores and oaks that offer relief from the California sun. Its location provides a unique microclimate where coastal fog often gives way to bright, inland sunshine, creating a perfect environment for birdwatching and wildlife spotting within the canyon.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is thoughtfully divided into several sections, with the Lions Campground being a popular choice for RVers due to its partial hookup options. While the facilities are more functional than fancy, the park excels in providing large, open spaces and direct trail access to the Ojai Valley Trail. This paved multi-use path is a major draw for visitors, allowing campers to bike or hike for miles in either direction. On-site restrooms and picnic pavilions ensure a comfortable stay for those prepared for a more traditional camping experience.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Guests are perfectly situated to explore the best of the Central Coast. A short trip south leads to the Ventura Botanical Gardens and the historic downtown district, while a quick drive north takes you into the heart of Ojai for local honey and artisan crafts. For those seeking water activities, the nearby Lake Casitas Recreation Area offers world-class bass fishing and water park fun, providing plenty of variety for a multi-day itinerary that spans from the mountains to the sea.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideally suited for self-contained RVers and outdoor enthusiasts who value tranquility and trail access over resort-style amenities. It is a top pick for avid cyclists and hikers looking to utilize the extensive trail network right from their camp doorstep. Families will enjoy the open space and natural surroundings, while travelers looking for a budget-friendly home base to explore the greater Ventura County area will find that this park fits their travel style perfectly.

It's currently(as of 01 Nov2025) closed while undergoing renovations, but it can be accessed via bicycle and on foot. It is a lovely park with beautiful Sycamore trees. I don't know when it will officially reopen.

Nice campground between Ojai and Ventura. Make sure to make reservations ahead of time. It’s just really close to the main road so there’s a lot of road noise. Bathrooms are decent and maintained well (no shower facilities though).

Another hidden gem. Park is nice plenty of shade and wide open areas. One problem, parking area is limited and outside the park. Gates have been closed all year long. Lots of bug so don't forget your bug juice of choice.

Nice campground. Hook up for RV available. No showers. Only 1 toilet. Lot of shade places.

always love to come here to relax. has a big enough area to barbecue, swim, sunbathe, tan, bike. no parking is allowed inside anymore because people would drink and drive, block the roads, and wouldn't park in the parking lot. floods took away the benches and stoves so bring your own chairs, tables, and stoves.
