Fountain Springs (Delaware County Park)

Overview

Fountain Springs County Park offers a tranquil escape for RVers seeking the natural beauty of Northeast Iowa. Spanning nearly 200 acres of lush, timbered landscape, this park is a prized destination managed by the Delaware County Conservation Board. It serves as a scenic sanctuary for those who value quiet evenings under the stars and the gentle sound of a spring-fed creek flowing through the valley. This park provides a rugged, authentic outdoor experience that highlights the unique geological features of the region.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away just a short drive from Manchester, the park feels worlds away from the flat prairies often associated with the Midwest. The terrain here is characterized by steep limestone bluffs and dense hardwood forests that create a canyon-like atmosphere. Its secluded location provides a unique microclimate that stays cool and shaded, making it a refreshing destination during the peak of the Iowa summer. The winding access roads lead travelers deep into a valley where the natural landscape remains largely undisturbed.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park maintains a rustic atmosphere, it provides 30 and 50 amp electric hookups for RV travelers looking for essential modern conveniences. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table, perfect for evening gatherings. Visitors should note that the facility features pit toilets and does not offer on-site showers or pressurized water hookups at every site. This lack of modernization preserves the natural serenity of the area, encouraging a more traditional camping experience focused on the surrounding environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the exceptional trout fishing in the cold-water stream, which is regularly stocked by the Iowa DNR. Beyond the water, miles of rugged hiking trails wind through the hills, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and wildlife photography. For those willing to venture out, the Manchester Whitewater Park and Backbone State Park are located nearby, offering additional recreation such as kayaking, rock climbing, and exploring ancient caves.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy off-the-beaten-path locations and primitive charm. If you are a fishing enthusiast or a nature photographer, the unique landscape and cold-water springs will provide endless inspiration. It is best suited for travelers who prioritize scenery and solitude over resort-style luxury, making it a favorite for those seeking a true outdoor immersion in the heart of the Iowa countryside.

Beautiful! Great place for a water stop for the Colesburg Back 40 bike race.

Always hard to catch trout here, but it's still fun to get away from the sounds of the big city and stand in the water all day.

Quiet little park. They do have camping no electric. Pit toilets, no shower house. Nice stream for trout fishing. Met several people that were just letting dogs roam no leashes. Overall it was a decent park.
