Frances Slocum

Overview

Frances Slocum State Park offers a peaceful retreat centered around its namesake horseshoe-shaped lake in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Spanning over 1,000 acres, this destination provides a classic state park experience where nature takes center stage. Whether you are looking to escape the bustle of the city or find a scenic basecamp for your RV, the park offers a blend of historical significance and modern outdoor recreation. The park is named after a young girl who was historically abducted by the Delaware Indians in 1778, adding a layer of local heritage to the Frances Slocum Lake landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Wyoming, PA, the park is nestled within the scenic ridge and valley province of Luzerne County. It is conveniently located near the Wilkes-Barre and Scranton metropolitan areas, providing easy access to essential supplies while maintaining a sense of secluded wilderness. The landscape is defined by lush hardwood forests and the tranquil waters of the 165-acre lake, which serves as the park’s primary focal point. The surrounding region is characterized by rolling hills and proximity to the Susquehanna River, offering a picturesque backdrop for travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground offers nearly 100 sites that cater specifically to the RV community. Most of these sites are equipped with electric hookups, making it easy to power your rig during your stay. The park provides several facilities to ensure a comfortable visit for all travelers:

  • Modern restrooms featuring warm showers and flush toilets.
  • A conveniently located sanitary dump station for RV maintenance.
  • Large picnic areas with tables and fire rings at every campsite.

In addition to the camping area, visitors can enjoy the seasonal swimming pool and various boat rental options at the marina. The park's layout is big-rig friendly, though some sites offer more shade and privacy than others.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 13 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through diverse habitats and offer stunning lake views. The water is a popular spot for fishing and boating, known for its populations of crappie, bluegill, and walleye. For those willing to explore further, the unique glacial formations at the Seven Tubs Recreation Area are just a short drive away. Additionally, the park hosts various environmental education programs throughout the summer months to engage visitors with the local ecosystem.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for family campers and nature photographers who value a quiet, organized environment. Because the lake does not allow gasoline-powered boats, the quiet atmosphere remains remarkably preserved throughout the season. It is best suited for those who prefer a rustic, natural setting over a high-activity commercial resort. It is also an excellent choice for pet owners, as many of the camping loops are designated as pet-friendly, allowing you to bring your four-legged companions along for the adventure.

It's a beautiful state park just old and a little run down but kept looking nice. Bathrooms are cleaner than most parks. They could go around and blow the leaves off the roads and sites that are booked.

Beautiful place. I have been here twice, the first time for a hike and the last time for a mushroom program a club ran. The lake is beautiful! I plan on coming back with my kayaks to spend more time on it. I want to explore more of the lake in my kayak. There are also some trails I have not had a chance to see. The park is well kept with clean restrooms and plenty of parking. It's great to have benches around the lake to just relax and enjoy the view!

Wonderful place for amateur hikers, taking a scenic walk, or just sitting by the water. Picnic tables and grills are available for having a cookout. Get in touch with nature here!

Camp site was great, very beautiful, quiet and peaceful. We walked a couple of the trails and they were well maintained, a little muddy but it did rain the night before. The kayak rentals were reasonably priced and the staff who helped us were incredibly kind and explained everything very well. We had an amazing time here and would love to visit again sometime. Highly recommend.

Beautiful serene place. Our first camping experience there. There is a beautiful lake. Different hiking trails. Great programs. Swimming pool for a tiny fee per camper. Very friendly staff. 2 playgrounds. Very clean restrooms. We love simple and natural.
