Francis Park

Overview

Francis Park is a unique destination in Kewanee, Illinois, offering a blend of history and nature. Donated by Fred Francis in the early 20th century, the park serves as a 40-acre wooded oasis for travelers. It is most famous for "Woodland," the former residence of Mr. Francis, which stands as a mechanical marvel of its time. Visitors often appreciate the quiet, reflective atmosphere that sets this park apart from busier highway stops.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a few miles outside of downtown Kewanee, the park is nestled within the rolling landscapes of Henry County. The area is characterized by dense clusters of mature oak and maple trees, providing ample shade for campers. Its location offers a secluded rural feel while remaining close enough to local conveniences for supplies. The surrounding countryside provides a classic Midwestern backdrop that changes beautifully with the seasons.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides a variety of electrical hookup sites suitable for RVs, alongside primitive camping areas for a more rustic experience. A central dump station and fresh water access are available for guests. Key features for visitors include:

  • Spacious picnic shelters for group gatherings
  • Clean playground areas for children
  • Dedicated hiking and walking trails
  • On-site park ranger presence for guest safety

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

  • The historic downtown district with local dining
  • Baker Park Golf Course
  • Seasonal community festivals and farmers markets

Outdoor enthusiasts can also visit the nearby Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park for additional fishing and boating.

Who This Park Is Best For

Wonderful campsite, super accessible, right next to a major highway. Campsite without power hookup was 10 bucks. With power hookups for rv: 13 bucks. Several water pumps with potable water. Several portapotties, and a bathroom within short walk from campsites.
