Fremont Peak

Overview

Perched high in the Gabilan Range of San Juan Bautista, Fremont Peak State Park offers a rugged and serene escape for RVers who prioritize breathtaking views over resort-style amenities. Known for its panoramic vistas that stretch across the Salinas Valley to the Monterey Bay, this park provides a tranquil environment far above the coastal fog. It serves as a primitive camping destination where the natural landscape and the massive California sky remain the primary focus of every visit.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated at an elevation of over 3,000 feet, accessible via a narrow and winding road that climbs steeply from the town of San Juan Bautista. Surrounded by oak woodlands and golden grassy ridges, the location feels remarkably remote despite its proximity to the Central Coast. Visitors often witness dramatic sunsets and clear night skies above the marine layer, making the surrounding environment a playground for photographers and nature enthusiasts seeking a quiet retreat among the peaks.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive state park, the facilities are designed for self-contained RVs and minimalist travelers who enjoy dry camping. There are no hookups available at the sites, so travelers should arrive with full tanks and charged batteries. Standard features provided at this location include:

  • Picnic tables and fire rings for evening campfires.
  • Access to pit toilets located conveniently throughout the camping loops.
  • Potable water available at centralized faucets, though supply can be limited.

Due to the winding access road, the park is restricted to smaller rigs, typically accommodating motorhomes up to 25 feet and trailers up to 20 feet.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park is famous for the Fremont Peak Observatory, which hosts public programs for stargazing throughout the year, offering a chance to view planets and star clusters through a world-class telescope. Hikers can explore several miles of trails leading to the summit for 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding mountains. Just a short drive back down the mountain, the Old Mission San Juan Bautista offers a deep dive into California history within its historic plaza and charming downtown district.

Who This Park Is Best For

Fremont Peak is ideal for small rig owners who enjoy off-the-grid experiences and rugged mountain scenery. If you prefer stargazing and quiet evenings under the Milky Way over modern conveniences like Wi-Fi or cable TV, this park will suit your travel style perfectly. It is a favorite for those seeking a rustic stopover while exploring the San Benito County area or those wanting a high-altitude perspective of the California coastline, away from the crowded valley floor.

We had a great two-night camping trip with our kids at Fremont Peak State Park. The location offers incredible views, especially from the peak itself—the short climb is absolutely worth it for the panorama! A huge highlight was visiting the observatory just a few minutes away. We loved the lecture on local plants and stars, and getting to see Saturn through the telescope was unforgettable. (Just be sure to read their instructions about minimizing light after dark!) Overall, a fantastic experience

I used to live pretty close to Fremonts Peak on the Salinas side and used to go up a lot just to go to the peak. I even got a 80$ ticket for going up at night after they closed to see above the fog and Salinas at night lol. I would do it again lol

Needed a camp while traveling to the redwoods and found this park. Surprisingly busy place with most campsites being full during our stay in June 2025. The sites were fairly well spread out and there was potable water and put toilets available. The temperature was significantly cooler than down in the valley. The road up is long, narrow, and windy. I would NOT recommend any large RVs or trailers attempting.

Spectacular views and easy hiking. Campgrounds perched perfectly for a nice day of nature and peace. Peak is super fun to walk and climb up to and there are a few small caves as well to explore.

I'll admit that the weather was not on our side during our stay (It was unusually hot!), but the park has apparently been under-funded for a very long time. Most of the picnic tables are dirty and dilapidated. The invasive weeds (Italian thistle that will take your skin off) is everywhere. There are great views from the park stretching from Moss Landing to Gilroy; but a campground that close to that many people should not rely on pit toilets. The stench of the toilets was awful and, of course, attracted flies that made life pretty miserable. We were with a scouting group and asked in advance if there was a service project we could do for the park. The answer came back no. Really? Just scrubbing clean some tables would be an improvement. The youth enjoyed the Observatory that is open a few times a year because the evening weather was perfect and insect free, and they loved the telescope viewing of the sky, but tent camping at Fremont Peak is not something I would ever recommend.
