Fremont-Winema/Marster Spring Campground
Overview
Marster Spring Campground offers a serene, rustic escape tucked away within the expansive Fremont-Winema National Forest. Located along the scenic upper reaches of the Chewaucan River, this Forest Service destination is designed for travelers who prioritize natural beauty and quietude over modern luxuries. It serves as a peaceful, shaded base for those exploring the unique transition zone where the high desert meets the timbered slopes of the eastern Cascades in southern Oregon, providing an authentic wilderness camping experience.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly eight miles southwest of the small community of Paisley, Oregon, the campground sits at an elevation of approximately 4,400 feet. The surrounding landscape is characterized by stately Ponderosa pines and lush riparian vegetation that stays green even in the summer heat. The Chewaucan River winds through the area, offering cool breezes and a vital corridor for local wildlife such as mule deer and elk. The air is crisp, and the night skies are remarkably dark, making it an excellent spot for stargazing.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service facility, the amenities here are intentionally simple to maintain the wilderness character of the site. The campground offers vault toilets and seasonal potable water provided via a classic hand pump. Each individual site features a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. While there are no electrical hookups or sewer connections, the spacious layout provides plenty of privacy between neighbors, which is a significant advantage for those seeking a quiet retreat from crowded commercial parks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this remote corner of Oregon. Anglers will find excellent opportunities for fly fishing for native Redband trout in the nearby river. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the Fremont National Recreation Trail is accessible nearby, offering miles of exploration through diverse terrain. A short drive away, the Summer Lake Wildlife Area provides world-class birdwatching, while the town of Paisley offers a taste of authentic ranching culture and essential supplies for your journey.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for RVers who prefer off-the-grid camping and possess self-contained rigs capable of navigating gravel forest roads. It is a haven for nature photographers, solo travelers seeking solitude, and families looking to bond without the distractions of digital life. If your travel style favors scenic river access and a deep connection to the national forest system rather than resort-style amenities, Marster Spring is a quintessential southern Oregon stop for your itinerary.

Beautiful scenery, we tried to make it down but the road was rough, lots of loose rocks and dirt on the hillsides, definitely a little hazardous. Called it off and turned around after a couple medium sized boulders laying in the roadway. I believe it was the brattain fire (2020) that caused most of this damage. The community has done a lot of great restoration, it’ll get smoother as time goes on. Definitely going to try with better weather. (visited early November)

MOSQUITOS! and a lovely campground with fire pits and picnic tables and a clean pit toilet. (Y'all are blessed out here in Oregon with lovely camping areas and cheap - use SR or Disabled Park pass! Bring bug stuff and screens for the car windows or a screen room tent thing for visiting or hanging out
