Fremont-Winema/Thompson Reservoir Campground
Overview
Thompson Reservoir Campground offers a serene lakeside experience tucked within the expansive Fremont-Winema National Forest. Located south of Silver Lake, Oregon, this site provides a classic Pacific Northwest camping atmosphere where the forest meets the high desert. It is an ideal destination for travelers who value solitude and a direct connection with nature over the frantic pace of modern resorts. The park manages to feel both expansive and intimate, providing a peaceful retreat for those exploring the Oregon outback.
Location & Surroundings
The campground sits at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet, providing cool evenings even during the peak of summer. The scenic reservoir is the focal point, surrounded by a mix of ponderosa pines and open grasslands. The landscape is characterized by its rugged beauty and provides a habitat for various local wildlife including deer, elk, and numerous bird species, making it a picturesque spot for nature photography and wildlife viewing. The transition between timber and rangeland creates a unique ecological backdrop for your stay.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service site, the amenities here are basic but functional for self-contained RVers. Visitors will find the following features on-site:
- Vault toilets and hand pumps for potable water.
- Spacious sites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables.
- A concrete boat ramp for easy access to the water.
While there are no hookups available at this location, the spacious layout accommodates many mid-sized rigs. The gravel access roads and pads are well-maintained, though travelers with very large motorhomes should navigate with care.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw here is the excellent trout fishing, as the reservoir is frequently stocked and popular with local anglers. Beyond the water, the surrounding area offers unique geological wonders such as Fort Rock State Natural Area and the massive volcanic crater known as Hole-in-the-Ground. Hikers and explorers will find endless forest roads to traverse, while the remarkably dark night skies offer some of the best stargazing opportunities in the region, far from any city light pollution.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is a perfect match for boondockers and dry campers who enjoy a quiet, rustic environment. It is particularly well-suited for fishing enthusiasts and families who want to disconnect from technology and spend their days on the water. If you prefer a primitive camping experience with plenty of space between neighbors and easy access to outdoor recreation, this hidden gem in the Oregon high desert will not disappoint.

Beautiful campground. Absolutely NO USFS service.

Very quiet, beautiful scenery; one other camper here in 8/02-03/25. 17 sites, trash cans for garbage, outhouses. No camp host. Reservoir water has algae, no swimmers or fishermen in the area. Great for biking the forest roads and bird watching. Cattle graze all over and add to the reservoir pollution.

Paved road in and paved campground roads. 4/11/25 reservoir is full. Some snow on campground roads. 4-wheel drive and high clearance needed.
