Gallatin/Lonesomehurst
Overview
Lonesomehurst Campground, managed as part of the Custer Gallatin National Forest, offers a serene escape on the shores of Hebgen Lake. Unlike the bustling commercial parks located directly in town, this site provides a more authentic Montana experience under a canopy of Douglas fir and lodgepole pines. It serves as a quiet alternative for those visiting West Yellowstone who prefer the sounds of the forest over highway traffic. The park is well-regarded for its scenic waterfront access and peaceful, natural atmosphere.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 12 miles west of the town of West Yellowstone, the park sits along the south arm of Hebgen Lake. The landscape is defined by mountain vistas and lush forest greenery, providing a sense of seclusion and wilderness. Its position near the Madison River makes it a prime spot for those looking to explore the geological history of the area, including the site of the 1959 earthquake. The high elevation ensures cooler summer temperatures, making it a refreshing retreat during the peak travel season.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional forest service campground, meaning amenities focus on the essentials rather than luxury. Visitors will find vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. For those traveling with watercraft, the park features a convenient boat ramp, allowing easy access to the lake’s calm waters for a day of fishing or paddling. Note that there are no hookups available at this location.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the proximity to the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, which is just a short drive away. Anglers frequently visit for the world-class fly fishing opportunities on Hebgen Lake and the nearby Madison River. Exploring the nearby Earthquake Lake Visitor Center offers a sobering look at the region’s natural power. On-site, campers enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, and wildlife viewing, with frequent sightings of osprey and bald eagles throughout the summer months.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for dry campers and boondockers who do not require electrical or sewer hookups to enjoy their stay. It is a fantastic choice for families and anglers who want immediate water access while remaining close enough to Yellowstone for convenient day trips. If you prioritize a quiet, nature-focused environment over resort-style amenities, this rustic lakeside destination will likely fit your travel style perfectly. It is best suited for those seeking a true outdoor immersion experience.

Campground is pretty well maintained. We had campsite 16 and it had such a beautiful view. We will definitely stay here again.

This was my first time going up to Yellowstone and this was the nearest campground available. It will be the campground I return to everytime from now on. We were situated right next to the lake, so we had a wonderful view out of our tent in the morning as the sun reflected off the water. This campground has toilets, dumpsters, firepits with a grill over it, and secondary water spigots to fill up and put out your fire. Very much enjoyed our time here.

Small location but it will handle the small or big rigs. By the lake and the Canadian Geese were having a party on the lake...and every so often Swans would glide by. Potable water stations, waste receptacles with recycling, vault toilets ( very clean !! ) and a Camp Host on Site. Close to West Yellowstone entrance ( 39 miles to Old Faithful )... Call ahead - I was lucky and found a spot !
