Gambrill
Overview
Gambrill State Park offers a peaceful mountain retreat situated on the crest of Catoctin Mountain in Frederick County. Known for its scenic stone overlooks originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the park provides a classic Maryland woodland experience. It is a destination where nature takes center stage, offering a quiet escape from the bustle of the nearby Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas. The park is divided into two main areas, with the High Knob area providing the most famous vistas of the region.
Location & Surroundings
Perched high above the surrounding landscape, the park provides breathtaking views of the Middletown and Monocacy Valleys. The elevation offers cooler temperatures during the summer months compared to the humid valley floor. While the access roads are winding and steep, the payoff is a secluded atmosphere surrounded by a dense hardwood forest that transforms beautifully with the changing seasons. Its proximity to the city of Frederick provides a unique balance of rugged wilderness and urban convenience for travelers passing through the mid-Atlantic.
Amenities & Park Features
The Rock Run Campground serves as the primary hub for RVers, featuring several sites equipped with 30-amp electric hookups. While the campground maintains a rustic and natural feel, guests have access to well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and a convenient central dump station. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, encouraging traditional campfire evenings under a thick canopy of trees. It is important to note that the terrain is hilly, reflecting the mountain setting, and water is available at central spigots throughout the loop.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the 16 miles of multi-use trails that weave through the park, which are highly popular for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Just a short drive down the mountain is the historic city of Frederick, where travelers can explore local boutiques and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. For further exploration, the nearby Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park offer additional waterfalls and rugged terrain, making this park a great home base for regional discovery.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers seeking a traditional mountain camping experience rather than a paved luxury resort. Due to the tight turns and specific site dimensions, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs and campers who enjoy active outdoor pursuits like hiking and photography. It is a perfect match for those who value privacy, nature, and panoramic views over extensive on-site commercial amenities, offering a true sense of Maryland's natural heritage and a quiet place to recharge.

Great park! Well marked trails, dog friendly, has bathrooms, different parking options for if you want to hike to an overlook or just drive there.

Great park with nice trails for every level of hiker. Overlooks were nice and right by parking so you don't have to walk far to see them if you don't want to really hike. Lots of picnic tables and grills to cookout. Green trail was nice but had some steep inclines and declines, definitely not dog friendly. Area was nice and quiet and a good escape for the day. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to do the green trail loop. White trail is stated good for families and is only a mile. Few players areas for kids including some swings and a seesaw.

Nice hiking trails, although they are a little overgrown. Some of the lookouts no longer have a view because the trees have gotten too tall. That’s still some good hiking.

Took my dogs here recently and they had a blast. So many easy to follow hiking trails for them to explore. The overlooks are beautiful. Really worth taking your dogs there for some much need exercise and fun time. Great place to release some stress and enjoy the out doors.

This is a wonderful, quiet, beautiful, and relaxing campground!! The area near the entrance is wonderful. There are gazebos, pic nic tables, grills, bathrooms, and much open space for activities. There is a nice smaller fishing pond. Some of the campsites are not too flat, some are great for tents. The campsites are a bit small. Unfortunately, the campsites aren't in the woods. The walking paths are wonderful. Some of the paths have lighting at night. The bath house, I must say, is wonderful. I was surprised! There are two stalls, the spacious showers, and mirrors with shelves. Two ceiling fans, which is great for air circulation. The staff as far as I've seen. Have been kind, friendly, and professional.
