George Washington & Jefferson/Elizabeth Furnace Rec Area
Overview
Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area offers a tranquil escape into the Lee District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Located in the picturesque Fort Valley, this destination blends American history with rugged natural beauty. Unlike modern resorts, this forest service campground provides a traditional camping experience where the sound of the wind through the hardwoods takes center stage. It serves as a peaceful gateway to the mountains for those seeking a primitive, nature-focused retreat.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked between the eastern and western ridges of the Massanutten Mountain, the park is just a short drive from Strasburg, VA. The surrounding landscape is defined by dense forest cover and the winding Passage Creek, which flows through the valley floor. The geography creates a secluded atmosphere, making travelers feel worlds away from the nearby Interstate 81 corridor. This area is a prime example of the lush, rolling terrain characteristic of the Shenandoah Valley region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest site, Elizabeth Furnace prioritizes a rustic aesthetic and a close connection to the environment. There are no hookups available, so RVers should arrive prepared for a dry camping experience. The campground offers basic necessities including vault toilets and seasonal drinking water available via hand pumps. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring. While the sites are paved, the narrow access roads and mountain turns mean this park is best suited for smaller RVs and camper vans.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, starting with the Signal Knob Trail, which offers panoramic views of the valley. History buffs can explore the remains of the 19th-century iron furnace located within the recreation area, which tells the story of the area's industrial past. Passage Creek is a popular destination for trout fishing, especially during the spring stocking season. For those who enjoy water activities, the North Fork of the Shenandoah River is nearby, offering opportunities for kayaking and river tubing.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers who value peace and quiet over high-end amenities. If you prefer waking up to the sounds of nature rather than the hum of a neighboring air conditioner, this is your spot. It is a perfect fit for adventurous hikers and van-lifers who enjoy a boondocking style of stay. Because of the size constraints on the parking pads, it is best for those with compact rigs looking for an authentic forest immersion.

Absolutely gorgeous park and campground. Interesting walking trails from beginner on up. Lots of places to picnic. Some infrastructure is damaged and needs repair, but I was only in a small section of a very large recreation area. The pig iron trail has the Elizabeth Furnace ruins and plenty of descriptive markers on the trail and it’s only a quarter mile long but some of the trail is rough for casual walking so be prepared. No cell service, but Google maps works offline, so it was easy to navigate out when done hiking. 4 stars for the damaged/collapsed infrastructure but otherwise recommend!

Not everyone would agree with my five star rating if they’re looking for a Glamping location. My wife and I love the rustic camping experience. Prior to season opening only vault toilets are available and potable water faucets. What we loved about it was the large private campsite with paved pad, surrounded by trees and backing up to Passage Creek, stocked with trout. And only 10 bucks a night! This was the perfect camping getaway for us and also because it was only an hour and 15 minutes away from our home.

10/25/2024: Leaves have already fallen. So it’s pretty much the end of fall here. Parking lot across the bridge is quite large. It would be a very nice place for hiking, camping, fishing (trout stocked Passage Creek runs through here) and picnicking for everyone at this area. But don’t forget to spray bug repellent as there are lots of bugs.

Elizabeth's Furnace is a great place for nature enthusiasts to hike, listen to the sounds, or just relax in an unscathed natural environment. I have tent-camped alone in all four seasons. I've always found something new and inspirational to write about or paint the scenery around me in a peaceful place throughout that particular area. At night due to the thick canopy of trees that provide more than ample shade during the day, it is pitch black. You have to have multiple lanterns or lights just to keep it safe walking around your campsite. Through the fall and winter months, you will need appropriate gear to stay warm at night because the ground gets very little sun during the day and tends to retain moisture that causes the already colder temperatures to feel even colder through the night and early mornings. I've never been bothered by loud or inconsiderate campers which is a major plus for me.
