George Washington & Jefferson/Grindstone

Overview

Grindstone Campground offers a refreshing mountain escape within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Situated at an elevation of 3,800 feet, this facility provides a cool refuge for RVers looking to explore the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The campground is known for its dense forest canopy and direct access to some of Virginia’s most scenic hiking trails, making it a staple for travelers who value natural beauty and a quiet, rustic atmosphere over commercial resort amenities.

Location & Surroundings

Located near Troutdale, Virginia, the park is nestled among towering hemlock trees and thick rhododendron thickets. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the majestic peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Because of its high altitude, the temperature remains significantly cooler than the valleys below, often providing a crisp breeze even in mid-summer. The area feels deeply secluded, serving as a primary gateway to the high-country wilderness of southwest Virginia where nature takes center stage.

Amenities & Park Features

Unlike many national forest facilities, Grindstone offers electric and water hookups at many of its sites, making it a sought-after destination for RV travelers. The park features the following amenities for guest convenience:

  • Spacious, paved pads with fire rings and picnic tables.
  • Access to flush toilets and hot showers located in several bathhouses.
  • A central dump station for easy waste management.
  • A small playground area and an amphitheater for seasonal programs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Mount Rogers Trail, which begins right within the campground and leads hikers toward the highest point in Virginia. A short drive away is Grayson Highlands State Park, famous for its wild ponies and sprawling alpine balds. Additionally, the nearby Virginia Creeper Trail offers world-class cycling opportunities, while local mountain streams provide excellent trout fishing for those who enjoy a quiet afternoon by the water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature-loving RVers who want to trade reliable cell service for breathtaking forest views and fresh air. It is a perfect fit for families looking to introduce children to the outdoors and for avid hikers who want to be steps away from the Appalachian Trail network. If you prefer a quiet, shaded environment with the luxury of electricity while remaining immersed in a rugged national forest setting, Grindstone is an excellent choice for your Virginia mountain itinerary.

Large portion of the campground is closed currently. But the loop of campsites that are open are pretty secluded from each other and nice sites! Pit toilet was very clean during our visit and the campground was not very busy. Overall enjoyed our stay! No phone service.

It's very depressing driving through Grindstone (Federal Park) now because it looks absolutely deserted. We've camped here several years ago & loved it, so while we were staying at Grayson Highlands (VA State Park), we wanted to visit an old favorite. OMG, the Feds have let us down... dropped the ball. After research, we see they are planning to replace the sewage/water system since it's about 50 yrs old. Also, appears it will take them YEARS to accomplish this. As other reviews stated, there are a few tent sites, but we didn't feel comfortable getting out of our car. It's 😔 !!

Note that only cash or check payments are accepted. 50% discount available with interagency annual pass. I’ve camped here several times. It’s a great launching point for backpacking in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, especially if, like me, you’re driving in from a distance. This is a fairly quiet campground without a ton of amenities, although what is available is nice. Each campsite has a fire ring and a picnic table. During the regular season, there is potable water, restrooms, showers, and some sites have electricity. There is a playground area, a volleyball court, a horseshoe pit, a shallow swimming area formed by the stream, and even an amphitheater (not sure if it’s ever used for anything). There’s even a basketball goal (without a net, though). If you feel like going on a stroll, try the Whispering Waters trail (located at the end of the parking lot area). It’s a half-mile trail that winds along the stream for a good portion. A couple steep sections, but generally fairly easy.

They have one section open. Just for tents. Which is fine. But please mow the place. Looks like camping in a horror movie. And it's still cost more than the shrouding campground's. Come on Virginia you are looking bad. Hey governor we need our campground's!! Need grandkids to have some real memories. Not playing play station all the time.

We loved going camping there. Beautiful sites. Wish they would open full campgrounds again. Miss going there.
