Overview
Hidden Valley Campground offers a serene escape within the vast expanse of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Located near Covington, Virginia, this area provides a tranquil setting for RVers who prioritize nature over resort-style luxuries. The campground is situated in a historic valley that has remained largely unchanged, offering a quiet retreat from the modern world. It is the perfect place to disconnect from digital distractions and reconnect with the Appalachian wilderness while enjoying the sounds of the nearby river.
Location & Surroundings
The park is positioned along the banks of the Jackson River, a renowned destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the heart of the Alleghany Mountains. Surrounded by steep, forested ridges, the valley floor provides a unique microclimate and an immense sense of seclusion. Traveling to the site involves navigating winding mountain roads, which rewards visitors with views of the lush Appalachian landscape and proximity to the charming town of Warm Springs. The geography creates a natural bowl that keeps the atmosphere peaceful and secluded from highway noise.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive National Forest site, Hidden Valley focuses on the essentials rather than modern frills. RVers should note that there are no hookups available, making it a premier destination for those prepared for dry camping. The park features vault toilets, hand-pumped potable water, and individual sites equipped with sturdy picnic tables and fire rings. Most sites are level with gravel pads, and the layout provides a significant amount of private space between neighbors, allowing for a more intimate connection with the forest environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Jackson River, which offers exceptional opportunities for fly fishing and paddling through pristine waters. Hikers can explore the Hidden Valley Trail, which winds through the meadows and woods of the valley. For a touch of history, the nearby Warwick Mansion provides a glimpse into the region's 19th-century past. Additionally, the Jackson River Scenic Trail is just a short drive away, offering miles of flat, crushed-stone paths perfect for cycling and easy walking along the riverbank.
Who This Park Is Best For

Absolutely great view, better than the smokies. I passed by but definitely can stay here for longer time.

Panther Falls was really nice. There is a small waterfall. There were teens there jumping from the rocks. Nice place to take pictures. The road however, was terrible. Its not paved. Definitely not big enough for two cars.

Great Falls National Park (GNWF) showcases powerful waterfalls and dramatic Potomac River views. With rugged trails, history, and picnic areas, it’s an ideal spot for hiking, photography, and outdoor adventure near D.C.

The streamside trail to the waterfall at Roaring Run is gorgeous. You'll cross over the water via bridges several times on the .6 mile walk.

Beautiful place. We dispersed camped at Squirrel Gap Road. Original plan was for 2 nights but we only stayed for one because of severe thunderstorm warnings. We had to clean up some trash on our site left by someone before us who was disrespectful but it seems we always find that when we disperse. We have a habit of always leaving our site better than we found it. There is a trail nearby and there are several other sites available for camping further down the road.
