George Washington & Jefferson/Stony Fork
Overview
Tucked away within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, Stony Fork Campground offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature without sacrificing essential comforts. Unlike many rustic federal sites, this campground provides a developed setting where the canopy of mature hardwoods creates a private, shaded atmosphere. It serves as a peaceful basecamp for exploring the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, offering a quiet alternative to the busier commercial parks found along the interstate corridors.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a short drive from Wytheville, VA, the park sits at the foot of Big Walker Mountain. The drive to the campground is scenic, transitioning from the rolling valleys of Southwest Virginia into the dense, cool forests of the high country. The surrounding area is defined by its dramatic ridgelines and the winding Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway, which offers expansive views of the blue-tinted peaks that give the region its name. It is conveniently accessible yet feels remarkably isolated from the noise of modern life.
Amenities & Park Features
Stony Fork is unique among National Forest campgrounds because it offers water and electric hookups at many of its sites, making it highly desirable for RVers. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a lantern post, perfect for evening cookouts. The park features hot showers and flush toilets, which are well-maintained and provide a touch of home in the wilderness. There is also a central dump station available for departing rigs, ensuring all the basic needs of a self-contained traveler are met within a natural woodland setting.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find themselves perfectly positioned to enjoy the Seven Sisters Trail, a popular route for hikers and mountain bikers that connects directly to the campground. For those seeking panoramic vistas, the Big Walker Lookout is just a few miles away, featuring a high-altitude observation tower and a local craft shop. The nearby town of Wytheville offers historic charm, local breweries, and museums for a relaxing afternoon excursion, while the nearby Reed Creek provides opportunities for trout fishing in a tranquil environment.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for nature lovers and hikers who want to wake up surrounded by forest sounds rather than highway traffic. It is particularly well-suited for smaller to mid-sized RVs and trailers looking for a tranquil retreat with reliable utilities. While it lacks the high-speed internet and swimming pools of a resort, it excels for those who value birdwatching, campfire conversations, and a slower pace of travel. It is a fantastic choice for explorers who view their RV as a mobile cabin in the woods.

We enjoyed our stay here. The camp hosts are super friendly and fun to talk to. It was a bit chilly when we stayed and the bathrooms were warm and the shower was nice and hot. This place is about 1 1/2 hours from New River Gorge NP. Cell phone reception was great (GoogleFi). Go check out the hiking trail that's in the campground. It's really pretty. We will definitely be back.

Terry was a wonderful host, great basic campground. Loved all the USA Flags at each campsite 🇺🇸. Hot showers no highway noise and only $20 a night for tent camping. Plenty of small trails around the campsite but nothing terribly exciting to see on them.

We have been camping here for 6 plus years. I love the location and peaceful atmosphere. It's quite and sites are secluded. The showers need updating and regular maintenance seems to be an issue. They are clean thanks to the amazing hosts. The road is overgrown both side to side and overhead, needs a good trim. Be careful as branches will scrape the top of your camper. The 30 amp electrical needs some update as well. I have had to move several times over the last 2 years to find a site where the electric works correctly. An update and a little TLC would work wonders!!!

We stayed here on our way to Tennessee from DC area. The campground was nice. We arrived at night. There is no ambient light so good for stars bad for hooking up after dark. The roads were narrow which made backing in very difficult. So, I would say not big rig friendly. We didn't use the bathhouse so I can't really comment on that. Over all a pretty good campground. We would stay again.

Beautiful campground with well maintained sites and bathhouses. Showers are clean, good pressure, water hot. Sites come in a variety, one is a pull through, many are not big rig friendly, some are not well shaded but most are, some are slightly on an angle, some are next to the creek, but all are easy to get into. The ones without electric seem to be the prettiest and near creek. Hiking trails from campground. Water spigots in various locations & on some sites. Just a wonderful, secluded, peaceful place. Dump station on other side of the highway & works. Sewer hole is on the left side (not in the middle where you might expect it) next to a water hose for flushing.
