Gerber Reservoir (BLM)
Overview
Gerber Reservoir is a sprawling high-desert oasis managed by the Bureau of Land Management in southern Oregon. Situated at an elevation of 4,800 feet, this nearly 4,000-acre water body offers a stark, beautiful contrast to the surrounding arid landscape. It serves as a peaceful destination for travelers who value solitude and a deep connection with nature away from the crowds of more developed resorts. The vast water surface and surrounding rimrock create a sense of scale that is truly humbling for those visiting for the first time.
Location & Surroundings
Located near the small community of Bonanza, OR, the reservoir sits on a high plateau characterized by sagebrush, juniper trees, and dramatic volcanic formations. The area is part of the Klamath Basin and feels incredibly remote, providing a quiet sanctuary for weary travelers. Visitors are treated to expansive horizons and some of the clearest air and darkest skies in the Pacific Northwest, making it a prime location for those looking to escape urban light pollution and enjoy the natural world in its purest form.
Amenities & Park Features
The site features two primary developed areas, Gerber North and Gerber South campgrounds. As a BLM facility, amenities are focused on providing a primitive camping experience rather than luxury comforts. You will find vault toilets, seasonal potable water from hand pumps, and functional boat ramps for lake access. There are no electrical or sewer hookups at the individual sites, so RVers should arrive with full freshwater tanks and sufficient battery power to enjoy a comfortable, self-contained stay on the gravel-padded sites.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the primary draw at this location, with the reservoir known for its prolific yellow perch and crappie populations that attract anglers year-round. Boating and kayaking allow for quiet exploration of the many hidden coves along the winding shoreline. The area is also a haven for birdwatching, where you can frequently spot bald eagles, ospreys, and various waterfowl. For those on land, the surrounding rugged terrain offers miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking through the high-desert brush.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers and boondockers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over the hustle of a commercial resort. It is a perfect fit for anglers and nature photographers looking for a low-cost, high-reward natural setting with minimal distractions. If you enjoy wide-open spaces, do not mind navigating gravel roads, and appreciate the beauty of a high-desert landscape, Gerber Reservoir provides a quintessential Oregon camping experience.

Mosquitoes were a plague of biblical proportions. The North campsites were roomier. None were too far from the water. Lots of morning sun. Plenty of shade late morning to early afternoon. When the night sky's were clear you could see the Milky Way.

Nice rural reservoir, quiet. Two campgrounds, pit toilet, bring your own water. Flat spaces, plenty of room. Fine for dogs, kids. Fishing if there's enough water.

Great camp sites, clean. Water is low just like everywhere else. But there is some there.
