Gifford Pinchot/Iron Creek

Overview

Iron Creek Campground offers a deep immersion into the old-growth forests of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Located just south of Randle, Washington, this campground is a favorite for those seeking a traditional Pacific Northwest experience. The towering Douglas firs and western red cedars provide a lush, green canopy that creates a sense of seclusion and tranquility. It is one of the larger campgrounds in the area, yet it maintains a quiet, natural atmosphere that feels worlds away from the hustle of highway travel.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated along the Cispus River, tucked into a valley that showcases the diverse ecology of the Cascade Range. Its location provides easy access to the Woods Creek Information Center and serves as a prime basecamp for exploring the eastern side of Mount St. Helens. The surrounding terrain is characterized by moss-covered forest floors and ancient trees, offering a cool, shaded environment even during the peak of summer. The sound of the river flowing nearby adds a rhythmic backdrop to the camping experience.

Amenities & Park Features

As a national forest site, the amenities here are focused on rustic simplicity. There are no hookups available, so RVers should arrive with full tanks and charged batteries. The park features vault toilets and several hand pumps for potable water throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. Most of the paved roads and spurs are well-maintained, making the area accessible for a variety of rigs, though larger motorhomes should check specific site lengths before arrival.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Nature lovers will find plenty to do within a short drive of their campsite. The Iron Creek Falls is a must-visit nearby spot, featuring a stunning waterfall accessible via a short trail. For those interested in geology, the Windy Ridge Viewpoint at Mount St. Helens provides an incredible perspective of the 1980 blast zone and Spirit Lake. Hiking is the primary activity here, with numerous trails ranging from easy forest strolls to more challenging climbs into the high backcountry of the Gifford Pinchot.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who value natural beauty over modern resort luxuries. It appeals to families looking to disconnect from technology and birdwatchers hoping to spot local species in the canopy. If you enjoy dry camping in a cathedral-like forest setting and want to be close to the volcanic wonders of the region, Iron Creek is an excellent choice. It is best suited for travelers who appreciate peace, quiet, and the scent of fresh pine.

Absolutely amazing campground. The trees are huge, the river nearby is gorgeous. No luck fishing but it was nice to cool off in the river during the heat wave that was going on. The camp hosts were super friendly. I can't wait to return.

Perfect campground for dry camping with family and kids. There are dry toilets and bear boxes throughout the campground. The cispus river runs close to the camp and provides some amazing views. There are trails in the campground that will take you through the old growth forest and the beautiful river. You will enjoy your stray here.
