Gifford Woods
Overview
Gifford Woods State Park offers a serene escape into the heart of the Green Mountains. Famous for its old-growth forest, this park serves as a lush sanctuary for travelers seeking a connection with Vermont's natural history. It provides a peaceful, shaded environment that feels worlds away from the hustle of daily life while remaining accessible to the adventurous spirit. It is particularly striking during the autumn months when the maples and birches transform into a vibrant canopy of color, making it a premier destination for leaf-peeping travelers.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated at the base of Sherburne Pass in Killington, Vermont, placing it in a prime location for outdoor enthusiasts. Surrounded by the Green Mountain National Forest, the topography is characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands. The intersection of the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail right within the park boundaries makes this a significant crossroads for hikers and backpackers, providing immediate access to some of the most iconic trekking paths in the United States.
Amenities & Park Features
Travelers should note that Gifford Woods provides a rustic camping experience rather than a luxury resort feel. There are no hookups available at the RV sites, making it an ideal destination for those who enjoy dry camping or boondocking. However, the park offers essential comforts to ensure a pleasant stay:
- Restrooms and hot showers for a small fee
- A reliable trailer sanitary station
- Spacious wooded sites with fire rings and picnic tables
Sites are nestled under heavy tree cover, providing ample privacy and a true woodland atmosphere for small to mid-sized rigs looking to disconnect.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure lies just outside the park gates. Guests are within walking distance of Kent Pond, a popular spot for fishing, paddling, and wildlife viewing. For those seeking vertical thrills, Killington Resort and Pico Mountain are just minutes away, offering world-class mountain biking and scenic gondola rides. Nature lovers can also hike to Thundering Falls, which is one of the state's most impressive waterfalls. The nearby town of Killington offers local dining and breweries for those wanting to sample the local culture.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers who want to wake up directly at the trailhead. Because the sites are tucked into the woods and lack modern hookups, it is best suited for owners of smaller RVs or camper vans who value solitude and nature over high-end amenities. If you are looking for a quiet basecamp to explore the Green Mountains or experience the legendary Vermont foliage, this rustic gem provides the perfect tranquil backdrop for your journey.

Beautiful park and excellent camping facilities. Easy access to the Appalachian Trail and a bunch of other trails. I wish they had some rv sites with electric connections.

Beautiful campground!! Very secluded, wooded sites with covered tent camping options!

We camped here Labor Day weekend and our spot was nice and private with woods surrounding most of our site. Not too buggy and the water spigot and bathroom were close by. The lean to was spacious and a great structure to have with our two dogs. Will come back again!

Absolutely amazing place to camp. The sites are well spread out giving you plenty of privacy. Right next to the Appalachian Trail and mountain bike trails. We drove about 15 minutes to the Green Mountain trails - HIGHLY recommend for mtb. There is a little deli for breakfast/lunch sandwiches less than 3 minutes up the road, also has lots snacks and drinks. There are also a few restaurants up the road. The facilities on site were amazing and clean and very well cared for. The shower was a major plus with very good water pressure - great after a long day outside! Very friendly and helpful staff as well. We will definitely be coming back here.

This campground was built by the civilian conservation core way around the 1930s and is still in pristine condition . Very clean, the park staff were helpful and friendly. There are no electric sites and water is available at a fill station not at each site. But the sites are clean and well separated. People with large campers over 30 feet will have a problem potentially. Excellent Mountain bike trails and is short drive to Killington.
