Gila/Dipping Vat Campground
Overview
Gila/Dipping Vat Campground offers a serene escape into the heart of the Gila National Forest. Located near the high-mountain waters of Snow Lake, this campground is a favorite for those seeking a primitive camping experience surrounded by towering ponderosa pines. At an elevation of approximately 7,300 feet, the air is crisp and the pace is slow, providing a stark contrast to more developed urban RV parks. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and serves as a gateway to some of the most remote and beautiful wilderness in New Mexico.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated in a secluded portion of the Gila National Forest, roughly 40 miles from the small community of Glenwood. The drive itself is an adventure, taking travelers deep into the rugged mountains of Catron County. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense forests and rolling hills, with Snow Lake serving as the primary geographic focal point. Visitors should be prepared for a long journey on gravel roads, which adds to the sense of isolation and natural beauty that defines this high-country destination.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic forest service site, Dipping Vat focuses on basic necessities rather than luxury. The park features approximately 40 campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, perfect for quiet evenings under the stars. While there are no electric or water hookups, the facility provides access to vault toilets and seasonal hand-pumped water. RV travelers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks, as there are no dump stations on-site. The lack of cell service ensures a true off-the-grid experience for every visitor.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this area. Fishing for trout at Snow Lake is a popular pastime, with a boat ramp available for non-motorized or electric-motor craft. Hikers can explore several nearby trailheads that lead into the vast Gila Wilderness, offering miles of scenic terrain and wildlife viewing opportunities. The area is also renowned for its exceptionally dark skies, making it a premier location for stargazing and astrophotography far away from the glow of city lights.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for boondocking enthusiasts and self-contained RVers who appreciate solitude and nature over modern conveniences. It is a perfect fit for anglers, hikers, and families looking to disconnect and enjoy a traditional camping atmosphere. Due to the winding, unpaved access roads, it is best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs and those comfortable navigating forest service terrain. If you value quiet nights and pristine mountain air, this remote New Mexico gem will not disappoint.

Hard to get to but worth it. Snow Lake is beautiful and there are lots of birds, but the water levels are low

Nice cheap campground with no hookups. Sites are spaced nicely and was only a few people when we stayed. Fishing was good also and even took the atv off in campground to explore area.

Always love camping here. The water is good, and the toilets are clean. Trash service is a big plus. Heard the wolves one morning which was cool. Hiked to the top of the Gilita Ridge which was also cool.
