Givhans Ferry

Overview

Givhans Ferry State Park offers a serene escape along the banks of the Edisto River in South Carolina. Known for its towering limestone bluffs and lush forest, this state park provides a tranquil environment for RVers looking to disconnect. It serves as a key access point for the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail, making it a popular spot for water enthusiasts. The park combines history, as much of its infrastructure was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, with natural beauty to create a peaceful outdoor retreat.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Ridgeville, the park is approximately 35 miles from the historic streets of Charleston. The landscape is defined by the Edisto River, one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in North America. The surrounding area features high bluffs and dense woodlands, providing a stark and beautiful contrast to the typical Lowcountry marshes. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by mature hardwood forests and winding trails that showcase the unique geology and ecology of the South Carolina coastal plain.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a dedicated campground with 25 sites equipped with water and electrical hookups. While it lacks full sewer connections, a dump station is available for RV travelers. Key features include:

  • Modern bathhouses with hot showers and restrooms
  • Picnic shelters and a playground for families
  • Access to the historic Riverview Hall for events

These facilities provide the essentials for a comfortable stay while maintaining a close connection to the surrounding wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the water, where visitors can enjoy paddling and fishing for bream and bass. The Old-Growth Forest Trail offers a moderate hike through ancient trees and diverse plant life. Just a short drive away, the town of Summerville offers charming boutiques and dining options. For those willing to drive further, the historic plantations and world-class culinary scene of Charleston are within reach, offering a perfect day trip opportunity before returning to the quiet of the woods.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize a quiet, rustic experience over commercial resort amenities. It is a haven for kayakers and nature photographers who want to explore the blackwater river ecosystem up close. Families looking for a budget-friendly outdoor getaway will appreciate the simple layout and natural play areas. If you prefer birdwatching and the sound of rustling leaves to cable TV and Wi-Fi, this State Park is a perfect fit for your South Carolina itinerary.

Very nice State Park in South Carolina. The RV loop has well spaced and large sites so you're not overcrowded. All sites are full hookup. They also have a primitive tent site which I did not visit. Plenty of hiking and River type activities available. Make sure you're aware of the potential wildlife there.

We stayed in Cabin 5. It was comfortable with excellent water pressure. Tina, the ranger who checked us in, was fabulous and very kind. The porch had a lovely view of the river and comfy rocking chairs.

Loved this campground! Quite and staff was friendly. Only down fall is no reception. It's good if you're looking to disconnect for a few days. Nice sandy swimming area and they have a place where you can rent tubes to float down the river.

Beautiful park! I was there along with a large church congregation for a baptism. Unfortunately, the restroom was out of order. If the restroom had been in working order, I would’ve given a 5-star.

Beautifully blessed place to rest your head overnight camping or get off the grid for the day. Excellent staff and management. This state park has my 10 stairs. Also, down river tubing in the summer months. Nice long wooded trails. Also has its own country store. Also, It has an off the beaten path beach area on the river.
