Glacier/Illecillewaet
Overview
Illecillewaet Campground serves as a premier wilderness basecamp within Glacier National Park, located just east of Revelstoke, British Columbia. Near the summit of Rogers Pass, this destination offers a rustic and immersive experience for travelers seeking to explore the high-alpine environment. The park is managed by Parks Canada and is celebrated for its historic significance and its immediate proximity to some of the most iconic hiking trails in the Selkirk Mountains.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 70 kilometers from the city of Revelstoke, the campground sits at the junction of the Illecillewaet and Asulkan rivers. The surroundings are characterized by towering mountain peaks and dense evergreen forests that define the interior rainforest. Because it is located just off the Trans-Canada Highway, it provides convenient access for RVers traveling through the interior, though the environment remains quiet and deeply connected to the rugged wilderness.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional national park site, the facilities are designed for a self-sufficient camping experience. There are no hookups for electricity, water, or sewer, making it a destination for dry camping and smaller rigs. The park provides essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay:
- Flush toilets and sinks within central washrooms
- Treated potable water stations
- Individual fire pits and heavy-duty picnic tables
- Metal food lockers for wildlife and bear safety
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
This location is a primary hub for outdoor enthusiasts and mountaineers. The campground serves as the trailhead for several legendary routes, including the Great Glacier Trail and the challenging Abbott Ridge Trail. History buffs will enjoy exploring the nearby ruins of the 1886 Glacier House hotel. Additionally, the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre is only a short drive away, offering interactive exhibits on the region’s treacherous railway history and modern avalanche control measures.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for active RVers who prioritize direct trail access and natural beauty over commercial resort luxuries. It is an ideal fit for hikers, photographers, and travelers looking to disconnect from digital life. Due to the unserviced sites and mountain terrain, it is especially popular with van lifers and small motorhomes that are equipped for a self-contained stay. Those who appreciate the sound of rushing water and crisp mountain air will find this one of the most rewarding stops in British Columbia.

Beautiful all around Revelstoke

Revelstoke's riverside playground offers a variety of trail types, with 360 degree views of Revelstoke's surrounding mountains. Just a short walk or drive from downtown, trails start at the Fourth St Bridge, Centennial Park or Kovach Park. In summer be aware of bears, and not that areas off the paved trails are dog offleash areas.
