Glen Rouge Campground

Overview

Glen Rouge Campground offers a unique opportunity to experience the Canadian wilderness while staying within the boundaries of the nation’s largest city. As the only campground in Toronto, it serves as the primary gateway to Rouge National Urban Park, providing a rare blend of urban convenience and natural serenity. Managed by Parks Canada, this destination allows travelers to transition from city life to the quiet rustle of hardwood forests in a matter of minutes.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Scarborough, Ontario, the park is nestled along the banks of the Rouge River, creating a lush canopy that masks the proximity of the surrounding metropolis. Its position near the intersection of Highway 401 and Kingston Road makes it highly accessible for large rigs traveling through the Greater Toronto Area. Despite being surrounded by one of North America's busiest urban centers, the campground provides a secluded atmosphere where the sounds of nature prevail over city traffic.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to a variety of camping styles, offering sites for both tents and RVs. Visitors can find sites equipped with electrical and water hookups, which are essential for those traveling in motorhomes or trailers. Essential facilities include clean washrooms, showers, and a central dumping station. Each site typically features a fire pit and picnic table, encouraging guests to enjoy classic outdoor evenings. The layout is designed to maximize privacy while keeping common areas easily accessible for all guests.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Nature lovers will find immediate access to the extensive trail network of Rouge National Urban Park, which winds through meadows, marshes, and forests. For a different kind of adventure, the world-renowned Toronto Zoo is located just a short drive away, making it a favorite stop for families. The campground’s location also provides a convenient base for exploring downtown Toronto; many travelers utilize nearby public transit to visit iconic landmarks like the CN Tower before returning to the quiet of the woods.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for urban explorers who want to visit Toronto without the high cost of downtown hotels or the stress of navigating a large RV through city streets. It is perfect for families seeking a balance between educational nature walks and city sightseeing. If you are a traveler looking for a convenient stopover along the 401 corridor that feels more like a provincial park than a parking lot, this unique urban wilderness is the perfect fit for your itinerary.

Minimize the risk of tick bites, be prepared. Cover exposed skin and your scalp/hair. Apply a DEET-based insect repellent to your skin. Apply an insect repellent with permethrin to your clothes, but never on your skin. After the hike, wipe your whole out with medium size towel to remove any bugs left sticking on your clothes, skin, hair, scalp, socks, shoes. Wash/rinse your skin and scalp to get rid of any loosely attached ticks.

This was once upon a time a beautiful little National park, I used to come here as a kid and have many fond memories of this place. It baffles me and bothers me to this day thinking about and wondering what is really going on behind that fence. Who's back there? Why has the park been "UNDER CONSTRUCTION" for 5 or 6 years yet with no contractors ever going in and out and no work ever being done. This is the only national park with campground that was actually accessible to people who lived in the city and did not drive or could not manage long commutes. Something needs to be done about this. I think it's about time that we find out what's really going on here and get some answers.

I am very happy with Rouge Camp. My daughter says it's the best camp in the world. I agree. Her head coucelor is a grade 1 teacher and she has 2 other counselors as well. It is well organized and fun!
