Golden Hill
Overview
Golden Hill State Park offers a unique camping experience on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Established in 1962, this destination is centered around the historic Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse, which was built in 1875. The park provides a tranquil atmosphere where the sound of waves hitting the rocky shoreline creates a peaceful backdrop. Visitors often come here to escape the bustle of city life and enjoy the expansive lake views that stretch toward the horizon.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the quiet town of Barker, NY, the park sits within Niagara County. The surrounding landscape is characterized by fruit orchards and lush farmland, typical of Western New York’s agricultural belt. While the park feels secluded, it is conveniently located about an hour north of Buffalo. The primary draw is the Lake Ontario shoreline, providing a rugged, natural edge that differs significantly from the sandy beaches found elsewhere in the region.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features campsites that accommodate RVs, including several electric hookup sites for modern convenience. Facilities include well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and a centralized dumping station for RV waste. Travelers can utilize the picnic areas and playgrounds, or take advantage of the boat launch for easy water access. The park is designed to highlight its natural beauty, keeping development minimal to preserve the authentic outdoor experience many campers seek.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the lighthouse tours, visitors can explore the Niagara Wine Trail, which features numerous local vineyards just a short drive away. Fishing is a major draw, as Lake Ontario is famous for salmon and trout. For a day trip, Niagara Falls State Park is within driving distance, offering world-class sightseeing. Local villages like Olcott provide charming shops and additional lakefront parks, making the area perfect for those who enjoy slow-paced exploration.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature photographers and history enthusiasts who appreciate the maritime heritage of the Great Lakes. It is well-suited for RVers who prefer scenic state parks over high-density commercial resorts. Families looking for a quiet retreat and anglers seeking access to premier fishing waters will find it particularly rewarding. If you value a dark night sky and the rhythmic sound of water against the shore, this is the perfect stop.

This state park is somewhat of a hidden gem on Lake Ontario. Beautiful views, spacious and the staff is great. We stayed in a well furnished Yurt while camping with a few others in our family. The lighthouse offers a unique and historic perspective. Love this camground!

Nice, clean and updated facilities at this NYS campground. Friendly staff. Campground lost power for a day and staff kept us informed. Groomed hiking trails, new playground and bathrooms, lighthouse and visitor center in site. Beautiful sunsets over Lake Ontario

One of the coolest campgrounds I've been to. Quiet, awesome location on the lake to relax or home base to Niagara etc. Nice grounds, people and boat launch.

This park is definitely a must visit destination! We loved our site as it was right near the waters edge and a perfect place for listening to the waves and watching sunsets. Took hikes along the trails, took a tour of the lighthouse and looked around the light keepers living space, they had ghost stories and craft time where we painted rocks & wood slices (our daughter loved this! ) We will be back 🥰

The BEST maintained state park we have ever visited, and we’ve been around! The bathrooms were super clean, the showers have great water pressure, the entire green areas are impeccably manicured (even the dump station is flanked by lovely flower beds!), the trails are well-kept and picturesque, and the historical lighthouse offers beautiful vistas. Add the relaxing ambiance of the lake’s waves lapping the shore, the fantastic sunsets, and the friendly and helpful staff (Barb, the lighthouse’s keeper/tour guide was very entertaining and informative), and you will agree this is a GOLDEN experience!
