Gonzales Independence Park
Overview
Gonzales Independence Park offers a serene getaway on the banks of the Guadalupe River. Managed by the city, this expansive public space serves as a hub for both local recreation and visiting travelers. It balances its historical roots with the natural beauty of the Texas Independence Trail Region. Whether you are passing through for a night or staying to explore local history, the park provides a quiet, tree-shaded environment that captures the slow-paced charm of rural Texas.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just south of the historic downtown area, the park is defined by its proximity to the Guadalupe River. Large, mature pecan and oak trees provide significant canopy cover across the grounds. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and riverside views, offering a lush escape from the highway. Its central location in Gonzales makes it an easy base for those interested in the First Shot of the Texas Revolution sites.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features a dedicated RV area equipped with water and electrical hookups to accommodate various rig sizes. Visitors have access to essential facilities including restrooms and a dump station. Beyond the campsites, the park is packed with recreational options such as a 9-hole golf course, walking and biking trails, and multiple playgrounds. For those who enjoy the water, there is a boat ramp providing easy access for kayaking or fishing along the river.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
History enthusiasts will find plenty to do just minutes away at the Gonzales Memorial Museum, home to the famous "Come and Take It" cannon. The downtown district features stunning Victorian architecture and local boutiques. Nature lovers can spend their days birdwatching along the river trails or enjoying a round of golf within the park's boundaries. The annual Come and Take It Festival in October is a major draw for visitors looking to experience local culture.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for history buffs and nature lovers who prefer a relaxed, public-park atmosphere over a commercial resort. It is a great fit for families who need space for children to play and for RVers who enjoy outdoor activities like fishing or hiking. Because of its quiet nature and scenic riverfront setting, it also appeals to retirees and solo travelers seeking a peaceful stopover with deep historical significance.

5 star property, lots of pretty open space, only no showers for tent campers, and I have to worry about golf balls flying at my head, so I did not want to camp here. Odd and dangerous management. And golf is boring and lame no offense, more camping showers, and safety, less lame golfing.

The rodeo area is so awful it's unbelievable. Gonzales needs to put some work into it or tear it down.....no shade, no rain shield. Don't pay for this one go to the one down the street.

The park is fabulous on a hot day. The swimming pool looks clear and wonderful. Plenty of areas along the water to sit and have a picnic. Fun areas for the kids. Beautiful trees and views of the water.
