Goose Lake
Overview
Goose Lake State Recreation Area serves as a lush oasis nestled along the Oregon-California border. This quiet park offers a serene environment characterized by expansive green lawns and large shade trees, providing a stark but beautiful contrast to the surrounding high desert terrain. Travelers often find this park to be a hidden gem for its peaceful atmosphere and incredible opportunities for wildlife viewing, particularly during migratory seasons.
Location & Surroundings
Located just 15 miles south of Lakeview, Oregon, the park sits at the edge of a massive, shallow lake bed. The landscape is defined by the Warner Mountains to the east and vast sagebrush plains. Because the lake level fluctuates significantly, the area often resembles a wet meadow, attracting thousands of birds. This high-elevation setting ensures cool evenings and a crisp, clean environment that feels miles away from the hustle of highway travel.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is well-regarded for its spacious paved sites that accommodate large RVs with ease. The park provides several essential features for a comfortable stay:
- Sites with water and electrical hookups
- Access to a central RV dump station
- Clean restrooms and hot showers
- Mature shade trees and grassy picnic areas
The abundance of mature trees provides excellent shade, and the manicured grass makes it a comfortable spot for families and pets to relax after a long day of driving through the desert.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, as the park is a premier destination for bird watching, featuring species like sandhill cranes and various waterfowl. A short drive north leads to Lakeview, known as the Tallest Town in Oregon, where you can witness the Old Perpetual geyser. For those willing to venture further, the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge offers rugged hiking and a chance to see pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep in their natural habitat.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature lovers and photographers looking for a quiet retreat away from commercialized RV resorts. It is perfect for travelers on a road trip through the Oregon Outback who appreciate a well-maintained, scenic stopover. Because of its large sites and calm environment, it also suits senior travelers and those seeking a low-key base camp for exploring the unique geological features of Lake County.

We loved staying at this lil Park for 2 days. It was an in-between stop. We were only going to stay 1 night. The grounds are beautiful, well kept. Beautiful variety of trees. Yummy apple trees!! The bathrooms were clean. The shower was not. The trail around the park was great. Very pretty. Wonderful birdery!! Lots to do in the area. Research it!!

Terrific overnight tent camping while motorcycling through the area. Shady sites. Helpful and friendly camp hosts. Green grass in July thanks to their irrigation. PS. Don't forget to bring your mosquito spray.

Small cute little campground. The pictures make it look bigger and nicer than it is. They only have 1- 30amp hookup the rest are 20. This place is good for a night, maybe 2, but that's it. There is nothing to do or explore there. They water the grass nonstop, so the mosquitos are out of control, which makes you not want to be outside. They have 1 bathroom that has 1 shower that could use some updating but worked fine. The dump station is to the side as you are coming in. I had no connectivity while I was there due to a nearby fire and a fiber cable being cut, so I'm not sure how the signal is there on the regular. Not likely I'd come back here again, but good for the 2 nights I stayed.

This park is so well cared for and peaceful! We just wrapped up a very restful week listening to endless birdsong, spotting owlets, hiking the perimeter loop and just generally moving slowly. Most people only stay a night on their way through to somewhere else but so far the park has never been full. We will definitely come back in the future for another week of rest (but maybe not while the Cottonwoods are dropping their cotton in June and stirring up our allergies). Most sites around the outside of the loop have nice hedges between them for privacy. Great dump station on site.
