Gordonia - Alatamaha

Overview

Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park serves as a tranquil escape in the heart of Georgia's coastal plain. Named after the rare Gordonia tree and the nearby Altamaha River, this destination offers a blend of recreation and quiet relaxation. Visitors are often captivated by the park's lush vegetation, which includes towering pines and ancient cypress trees. The atmosphere is distinctly that of a traditional state park, focusing on natural beauty and outdoor engagement rather than the high-paced energy of a commercial resort.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Reidsville, Georgia, the park occupies a unique position within Tattnall County. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the gentle terrain and wetlands typical of the Altamaha River watershed. While the park feels secluded, it remains easily accessible for those exploring the Georgia backcountry. The local area is known for its agricultural roots and friendly small-town charm, providing a peaceful backdrop for RVers who enjoy scenic drives through the rural South.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a well-maintained campground that accommodates RVs with electric and water hookups, supported by a central dump station and clean bathhouses. A major highlight for many guests is the Brazell’s Creek Golf Course, an 18-hole course that winds through the park's natural landscape. Beyond golf, the park offers a 12-acre lake for fishing and paddling, several picnic shelters, a playground, and a seasonal splash pad that is a favorite for those traveling with children.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can spend their days exploring nature trails that wind through swamp tupelo and bay trees, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching. Fishing for bass and bream in the mill pond is a popular pastime, and the park’s observation deck provides a stunning view of the local ecosystem. For a taste of local culture, visitors can explore the city of Reidsville or take a short drive to see the historic architecture and farm stands that define this region of Georgia.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is a premier choice for avid golfers who want the unique convenience of camping just steps away from the fairway. It is also an ideal fit for nature lovers and families seeking a classic camping experience with plenty of space for biking and hiking. If your travel style favors quiet evenings under a canopy of stars and active days spent on the water or the greens, this park provides the perfect Georgia retreat.

Lovely State Park. It's a unique setting right in a small town, but still feels like it's out in the Wiregrass forest. The cabins and day use are all well-maintained with a fun mini golf course. Like most all State Parks, it's a hidden gem that's worth stopping in.

What could Jack have done at this State Park!?! On days he wanted to relax, he could sit in a swing and read a book, or grab his binoculars and watch the wildlife. It's so peaceful around the lake. Then, he could take the 1-mile walk on the Swamp Bay Nature Trail, or walk around the beautiful lake and grounds. There are grills all over where he could fix some lunch, or he could check the Office for a snack or something to drink. If the kids come along, there are several playgrounds to work off some energy, while the adults get a workout on the outdoor exercise equipment. Two of the pieces of exercise equipment are wheelchair accessible, not commonly found in parks. At times when he brought his wife and kids, they could all play a round on the 18-hole miniature golf course; or maybe he would play 18 holes at Brazell's Creek Golf Course, or just hit a bucket of balls on the driving range. The occasions when they wanted to stay for a few days, the options start from simple tent campsites, to sites with hookups for a camper or motorhome. Some of the campsite views are extraordinary. My favorite is #24. For a more cushy stay, there are numerous cottages of different sizes that can provide a comfortable and homie atmosphere. When there is a friendly gathering among friends, he could reserve a Shelter, or for a huge family reunion, the Group Shelter is an excellent place to entertain. There is plenty of space and it has a fireplace and restrooms inside. The Group Shelter has a separate building to cook on gas grills. Don't forget to bring your small boat (electric motors only), or rent a boat, kayak or aquacycle at the office to cruise around the 12-acre lake or to do some fishing. You can also rent bicycles. A sign is posted that a new ADA pier will be installed in the near future. Overall, much has been done to accommodate the handicapped, so they can come and enjoy the park, as well. Jack Hill was a lifelong resident of Reidsville and did a lot for his community. Thirty-three of his years were served in the Georgia Air National Guard. He was the longest serving Georgia state senator at the time of his death. He was also responsible for many of the improvements and expansion of this park, and he would be proud that the name was changed after his passing in 2020 to honor his accomplishments. The previous name was Gordonia-Altamaha State Park, for the nearby River and the nearly extinct Gordonia tree that grows here. Stop by the Office and pick up a memento of your visit. There is a nice selection of items for everyone. Lisa was very friendly and provided some good information. (ask her about the special Christmas Tree🎄) For reviews on other parks and many other great places to visit, click on my name and select a topic. thank you! 😀

Park is very clean. $5 entrance fee. They have put put golf. I wish they had it like Little Ocmulgee State Park where they dont charge for golf and instead half the items you need there for anyone and everyone to use . It's an activity that you only do for a short while and I wouldn't pay for. Other than that splash pad is fun for the little ones. Many grills available throughout the park.

I had a good time during my stay here with my family on memorial day weekend. The staff was nice and the cabin was really clean. Will come back again next time.

We got married at Jack Hill State Park on May 4th, 2025. My husband proposed on the dock in the photo in 2024 and we knew we wanted to have our wedding here! From checking in to our cabin for the weekend to doing the final walk through of the Group Shelter where we held our ceremony, everything went well! The staff was extremely helpful and we are so grateful for the chance to spend our special day at this park! Highly recommend using the Group Shelter for a small wedding!! We will definitely visit again and again!
