Grand Haven
Overview
Grand Haven State Park offers a truly unique camping experience where the sand meets the pavement. Located directly on the shores of Lake Michigan, this 48-acre park consists entirely of asphalt camping sites situated right on the beach. It is one of the most iconic destinations in Michigan’s state park system, providing travelers with immediate access to the waterfront and the historic Grand Haven pier. The atmosphere is vibrant and communal, perfect for those who enjoy the energy of a popular coastal resort.
Location & Surroundings
The park is perfectly situated in the heart of Grand Haven, Michigan, nestled between the Lake Michigan shoreline and the Grand River channel. Unlike traditional wooded campgrounds, this location offers an open, sun-drenched environment with breathtaking views of the vast freshwater sea and the lighthouse. A scenic 1.5-mile boardwalk begins at the park and stretches along the river, connecting the campground to the city’s charming downtown district and local marinas.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is designed to accommodate a variety of rigs while providing essential modern comforts. Each site is paved and level, which is a significant advantage for larger units. The park features several key amenities for a comfortable stay:
- 30- and 50-amp electrical service available at every campsite.
- A central modern sanitation station for convenient waste disposal.
- Clean, well-maintained restroom buildings with hot shower facilities.
In addition to these services, visitors have access to a designated swimming beach, a playground for children, and several picnic areas equipped with grills for outdoor cooking.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are just steps away from some of the region's best entertainment. The Grand Haven Musical Fountain, a synchronized water and light show, performs nightly during the summer and is a local favorite. Walking the pier to photograph the south pierhead lighthouse is a must for any visitor. For those who enjoy active travel, the nearby boardwalk is perfect for morning jogs or bike rides that lead straight to local boutiques, ice cream shops, and waterfront restaurants.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for beach lovers and active families who want to be in the center of the action. Because the sites are close together on an asphalt lot, it is best suited for social travelers rather than those seeking secluded woods or quiet solitude. It is a fantastic choice for big-rig owners who appreciate easy leveling and for anyone who wants to enjoy a classic Michigan summer vacation without needing a tow vehicle to reach local attractions.

I highly recommend this campground. It is right on lake Michigan. Awesome views, beach. It's is a short walk up town which has lots of dinning options, shopping and entertainment. Great place for anyone!

I love this place. I try to camp here at least once a year. The grounds are clean and very well kept. The bathrooms and showers are clean and maintained. The dump and fill station is clean. Staff is nice. It's right on the beach. There's lots of restaurants and bars close by. The only thing that kinda stinks, is It is hard to get a reservation. Plan to book 6 months in advance. And the spots go fast. This is not their fault though, it's just a popular spot.

Very large State Park with an expansive beach-front, picnic areas, as well as a large campground area you can reserve. There are also free beach volleyball nets to use, a public bathroom, and playground. Visitors can walk on the dyke, which has two lighthouses, but these are not open to the public. The campground has bathrooms and showers, as well as power hook-ups for campers. The State Park is in walking distance of downtown Grand Haven, so visiting local stores and restaurants are part of the charm. Lots of parking, but you will need to pay a fee or have a Michigan State Parking Pass. Great viewing area for the famous Lake Michigan Sunsets or star-gazing at night.

Icy spring day with 30mph winds. Beautiful as always. Love visiting the site of one of our first dates and the spot where I proposed on a freezing February day. Now sharing that same sight with our firstborn 12 years later.
