Grand Lake St Marys
Overview
Grand Lake St Marys State Park offers a classic lakeside camping experience on the shores of what was once the world's largest man-made reservoir. This state-managed destination in western Ohio provides a mix of scenic waterfront views and shaded woodlots for travelers. Whether you are looking for a dedicated fishing trip or a long family vacation, the park provides a well-maintained environment where the history of the Miami and Erie Canal meets modern outdoor recreation. It serves as a vital hub for water sports and relaxation in the region.
Location & Surroundings
Located between the towns of St. Marys and Celina, the park is easily accessible via State Route 703 and US-127. The landscape is defined by the expansive 13,500-acre lake and its surrounding wetlands. The area is largely flat, making it ideal for easy walking and biking between the campground and the water. Visitors will find that the surrounding Mercer and Auglaize counties offer a peaceful, rural backdrop punctuated by the bustling activity of local marinas and lakeside communities that ring the water's edge.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground accommodates various RV setups with several full hookup sites and a larger number of electric-only options. Campers have access to clean shower houses, flush toilets, and a seasonal camp store for essentials. For recreation within the park, there is a dedicated camper swimming beach, a boat launch, and multiple playgrounds. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the on-site dog park and well-marked nature trails that meander through the marshy habitats and woodlands adjacent to the lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities dominate the itinerary here, from high-speed boating to peaceful kayaking. Fishing is a major draw, with many visitors seeking out crappie and channel catfish from the shoreline or piers. Off the water, the nearby town of Celina offers charming local dining and summer festivals. History buffs should visit the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in nearby Wapakoneta. For those who enjoy bird watching, the park’s eastern end features protected wetlands that attract migratory birds and bald eagles throughout the year.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want direct access to the water and ample space for trailers. The flat terrain and numerous playgrounds also make it a top pick for families with young children or those traveling with pets. Because it offers a blend of social campground life and quiet nature observation, it suits RVers who enjoy a lively atmosphere during the day followed by stunning lakeside sunsets in the evening. It is a must-visit for anyone touring Ohio’s state park system.

The park is beautifully maintained and has a lot of very mature, huge trees. The grass looks like a golf course. Our campsite (85) had a nice view of the water, was next to a playground and was a very short walk to the pool. The pool area was nice and the splash pad is an added touch. We loved our experience and will definitely return ❤️

It's a very busy campground but as busy as it was it was extremely quiet. Sites are pretty level and park is very clean. Check out on Sunday is a bit early with it being the busiest check out day everyone trying to use the dump stations. Wish Ohio would extend Sundays check out later by 2 hours like other states so people could stagger out a little more and not clog up traffic
