Grand Mesa/Jumbo
Overview
Located atop the world's largest flat-topped mountain, Grand Mesa's Jumbo Campground offers a serene escape into the high-altitude wilderness of Colorado. Situated near the banks of Jumbo Reservoir, this destination provides a classic mountain camping experience at nearly 10,000 feet of elevation. Travelers visit this park to trade city noise for the rustle of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir trees, finding a peaceful retreat that highlights the raw beauty of the Grand Mesa National Forest.
Location & Surroundings
The park is positioned along the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway, making the journey to the site as breathtaking as the destination itself. The surrounding landscape is defined by rolling alpine meadows and over 300 shimmering lakes. Because of its unique geography, the area stays significantly cooler than the valleys below, offering a refreshing summer sanctuary for those looking to escape the heat while surrounded by vibrant wildflowers and dense forests.
Amenities & Park Features
Jumbo provides a rustic camping experience that favors self-sufficient travelers. The facility features standard amenities including vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. While there are no hookups available, the park offers potable water and well-spaced sites that provide a sense of privacy. Essential features include:
- Vault toilets and seasonal drinking water access.
- Individual picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings for evening gatherings.
- Spacious sites designed for smaller RVs, vans, and tents.
Most sites are back-in and situated to maximize the natural view of the reservoir or the surrounding woodlands.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for guests staying at Jumbo. Anglers frequently visit Jumbo Reservoir for its excellent trout fishing, while hikers can access the famous Crag Crest Trail nearby, which offers 360-degree views of the Rockies. For a scenic drive, visitors can head to Lands End Observatory to look out over the Grand Valley. The area is also a haven for wildlife photography, with frequent sightings of deer, elk, and various bird species.

Very nice, clean, quiet campground. Outhouses we're kept very clean! Some spots had excellent shade, others were somewhat open. A great mix of spots for tents and RVs. Short walk to several fishable lakes. Potable water is adjacent to outhouses.

Level, electric site. Beaver family comes out each evening in Jumbo Lake- they put on quite a show hauling branches across the water. Saw a couple deer nearby early morning. Lots of quiet trails to explore.
