Grayson Lake

Overview

Grayson Lake State Park provides a serene escape into the lush landscapes of Eastern Kentucky. Centered around a stunning reservoir framed by towering sandstone cliffs, this destination is a favorite for those seeking peace and quiet. The park features a well-maintained campground that serves as an ideal base for exploring the rugged shoreline and dense forests that define this region. It balances natural preservation with comfortable facilities, offering a classic state park experience for RV travelers who appreciate the outdoors.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Olive Hill, KY, the park is nestled within the Appalachian foothills. The surrounding terrain is characterized by dramatic rock formations and hidden coves that are best explored by water. The location offers a sense of seclusion while remaining accessible from major routes like I-64. The thick canopy of hardwood trees provides ample shade throughout the camping areas, making the park a refreshing retreat during the warmer summer months when the Kentucky greenery is at its peak.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground offers 71 sites equipped with utility hookups, accommodating both smaller travel trailers and larger motorhomes. To ensure a comfortable stay, the park provides several essential facilities for the modern RVer:

  • Modern bathhouses with hot showers and laundry facilities.
  • A central dump station and a paved launch ramp for easy boat access.
  • On-site playgrounds and the nationally recognized Hidden Cove Golf Course.

The sites are generally spacious and tucked into the woods, offering more privacy and a more natural feel than typical commercial RV resorts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the water, where kayakers often paddle to see the Grotto Falls, a breathtaking waterfall hidden within a sandstone alcove. Fishing is another major pastime, with the lake well-stocked with bass, crappie, and bluegill. Land-based explorers can tackle several miles of hiking trails, such as the Lick Falls Trail, which showcases the area's unique geology. For a day trip, the nearby Carter Caves State Resort Park offers guided cave tours and additional rugged hiking opportunities just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an excellent choice for nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, scenic environment over a high-activity commercial park. It is ideal for families looking to introduce their children to fishing or kayaking in a calm, protected setting. Because of its peaceful atmosphere and proximity to a high-quality golf course, it also appeals to retirees and couples seeking a relaxing getaway where the beauty of the Kentucky wilderness is the main attraction.

This state park has a lot of potential, nice shade trees, walking trails, water and electric sites. They also have restrooms, laundry, playgrounds and a golf course next door. However, many of the sites are VERY unlevel, many trailers were parked in the grass and not on the pad provided. There is a lot of trash around the park (our fire pit was full of the last peoples trash, they did clean it up after two night). We walked down to the lake and there was trash everywhere and some of it had been there a long time. The dump station is nice and clean but it has a sharp turn to get out so again people have driven over the grass to get out. The lady at checkin was very nice.

Amazing place, very clean campground, some of the cleanest showers/bathrooms I've ever seen. Camphost Jack was Amazing, always near by and willing to help. We never made it to the beach area, but paddleboarding on the lake was great! We will definitely be back.

I'm a repeat visitor to Grayson. Both times traveling on motorcycle. This is a very clean park with very clean bathrooms/showers. There's AC in the bathroom which is definitely a plus. Most recently, Dale was the host and he was kind enough to deliver a couple bundles of wood to our site. If you arrive after the attendant leaves, there's a drop box to pay for camping. There's a very short trail to the lake to cool off. Lots of RVs, but plenty of electric sites that are tucked away. Great park.

We must have gone in the heat of tick season! Loved the scenery, the trails lead to beautiful waterfalls, the park is clean and quiet. The bathrooms were cleaned frequently, the staff hosts were always around and quick to bring firewood or ice. 4 stars due to the poison ivy everywhere, as well as the power on our site missing the 120v outlet, thankfully we had generous neighbors. Would recommend if your looking for a campground in the area.

This is one of the most beautiful state parks we have ever stayed at. Everything was amazing and very clean. The golf course is absolutely fantastic! We will be back again!
