Great Basin/Upper Lehman Creek Campground
Overview
Upper Lehman Creek Campground offers a serene, high-altitude escape within the rugged landscape of Great Basin National Park. Located at a significant elevation, this seasonal destination provides a quiet, intimate alternative to more crowded national park sites. It serves as an ideal basecamp for those wanting to explore the diverse ecosystems of eastern Nevada, ranging from high desert valleys to craggy subalpine peaks.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away at approximately 7,750 feet, the campground is nestled within a lush forest of aspen, Douglas fir, and mountain mahogany. The soothing sounds of Lehman Creek flow directly past many of the campsites, creating a tranquil mountain atmosphere. Travelers will appreciate the dramatic transition from the arid Sagebrush Steppe to the cool, shaded riparian corridor found right at their doorstep.
Amenities & Park Features
This facility offers a primitive camping experience designed for those who prefer nature over modern luxury. Each individual site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and fire ring, while vault toilets are centrally located for guest use. Notable features include:
- Access to potable water (seasonal only)
- Dedicated fire pits for evening campfires
- Level sites nestled among mature trees
There are no water, sewer, or electric hookups available at the sites, and a maximum vehicle length of 24 feet is strictly enforced due to the narrow campground roads and tight turns.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are perfectly positioned to explore the famous Lehman Caves, which offer guided tours of intricate limestone formations and rare shield structures. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive is just a short distance away, providing easy access to ancient Bristlecone Pine Groves and high-altitude glacial moraines. At night, the park's status as an International Dark Sky Park ensures unparalleled views of the Milky Way.
Who This Park Is Best For

Campsites are big and tables are set back from the road. The sites at the top end near the creek are loud with the sound of the creek even in September.

The campsites are a bit close together and there's no water spigots. But sites are clean and well maintained. Most parking pads were on a minor slope.

Great campground. Sites are unique and it is not crowded at all. Vault toilets were clean. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. No water was available at all. The Lehman Caves Visitor Center (about 3 miles away) has water and a dump station. We were in a tent. If you are towing a large trailer, check ahead. It appeared that many of the sites could not accommodate a long vehicle.

It is a national park campground in Great Basin National Park on the Nevada Utah border. It is at 8500 feet altitude, steep, rocky and forested with a diverse sub-alpine forest. There is a very fast moving, loud stream on South edge. Our camp was 50 ft from it, absolutely beautiful as it was wildflower season. There are nice, clean vault toilets, picnic tables, and water faucets coming next year, they are being installed this summer. BRING YOUR WATER! You can get some at Lehman Cave visitor center and at the RV waste dump if you have containers. This visitor center also has a good cafe and souvenir shop. There is no food in the gateway town of Baker available except for some prepackaged camping food at the stargazer in.

Very nice, my space 17 was not at all level or this campground would be a 5 star fer sure.
