Great Northern Fair & Campgrounds

Overview

The Great Northern Fair & Campgrounds serves as a practical and accessible gateway for travelers exploring Northern Montana. Located on the eastern edge of Havre, this facility provides a reliable staging point for those traversing the scenic Hi-Line. While primarily serving the annual county fair, the campground remains open throughout the warmer months to accommodate independent travelers. It offers a straightforward camping experience that prioritizes utility and proximity to town over luxury resort features, making it a staple for regional explorers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Hill County, the park sits just off U.S. Highway 2, a major corridor for cross-country travelers. The surroundings are characterized by the vast plains of the Milk River valley and the nearby Bear Paw Mountains to the south. Being located on the fairgrounds means you are just minutes away from Havre's local services, including grocery stores, fuel stations, and local eateries. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate the wide-open Montana skies while staying close to urban conveniences.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed for ease of use, featuring full hookup sites that include water, sewer, and both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. The layout consists of level gravel pads that can comfortably accommodate large rigs and tow vehicles. While the atmosphere is minimalist, the park provides essential utilities for a comfortable stay. Visitors often appreciate the wide interior roads which make maneuvering into spots stress-free. Note that amenities are focused on the essentials, reflecting its identity as a functional fairground facility.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Havre offers unique historical experiences, most notably Havre Beneath the Streets, a tour of the underground tunnels from the city's early days. Nature enthusiasts can drive south to Beaver Creek Park, one of the largest county parks in the nation, offering fishing and hiking opportunities. For a glimpse into ancient history, the Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump is located nearby, showcasing a 2,000-year-old archaeological site. These attractions provide a deep dive into the rugged history and natural beauty of the Montana plains.

Here for class reunion. Fair employee helpful making reservations, but no other contact. We were told we were to be in pull thru but when we arrived we were told site 12, Very tight to get 5th wheel in back in spot with already parked 5th wheel on drivers side and pull thru in front. Campground says it has showers and wifi. It does not have either. There are signs posted on the doors of the shower house that they are closed due to vandalism. No password for wifi found anywhere. Yet, I had to pay the full $35 for my site. It was a convenient place to stop over for the night while traveling Hwy 2.

Not bad for a small town fair. Had a small petting zoo, few games, couple rides, usual fair food, bingo, and alcohol. People were friendly. Parking was easy. Admission was free. Parking $5. Food was reasonably priced. Was incredibly hot outside! I wish they had a misting station set up!
