Great Salt Plains

Overview

Great Salt Plains State Park in Jet, Oklahoma, offers a surreal landscape unlike anywhere else in the region. Spanning thousands of acres of salt-encrusted ground, this park is built around the remains of a prehistoric ocean. It provides a tranquil atmosphere for travelers looking to escape the bustle of city life. Whether you are coming for the unique geology or the peaceful lakeside setting, the park serves as a gateway to one of Oklahoma’s most distinct natural wonders.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Alfalfa County, the park is nestled against the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. The horizon is dominated by vast, shimmering white salt flats that create a striking contrast against the Oklahoma sky. This remote location offers expansive views and minimal light pollution, making it an excellent spot for stargazing. The surrounding wetlands provide a rich habitat for diverse wildlife, creating a lush border around the stark salt plains.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features two main campgrounds with RV sites offering water and electric hookups. Travelers with larger rigs will find sites that accommodate their needs, though the layout remains focused on preserving the natural terrain. Visitors have access to clean comfort stations with showers, a dump station, and community picnic shelters. For those seeking more traditional lodging, the park also offers well-maintained cabins that provide scenic views of the water and easy park access.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The most popular activity is the seasonal selenite crystal digging, where visitors can unearth unique hourglass-shaped crystals found nowhere else on earth. The Great Salt Plains Lake is a hub for boating, fishing, and swimming during the warmer months. Birdwatchers frequently visit the area, as it is a major stopover for migratory species. Hikers can explore the Sand Creek Trail to experience the local flora and fauna up close.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and families who enjoy hands-on outdoor activities. Because of its quiet and somewhat remote nature, it is a perfect match for RVers who prefer a rustic, scenic environment over a high-traffic resort. Photographers and geologists will find endless inspiration in the shimmering salt flats, while birders will appreciate the proximity to the national wildlife refuge.

A nice state park with well maintained grounds and very friendly staff. Restrooms/showers stay on all year. We stayed in a north spillway site off River Road. Nearby wildlife refuge sits in the migratory flyway. Seasonal crystal digging on the far side of the lake - out on the salt flats - is a unique experience.

I can't say enough good things about this place and the people! The area is beautiful, easy access to the lake and all the amenities. Beautiful area. Wonderful people here- everyone from the park staff and the town of Cherokee is lovely and welcoming. Great small town. The park staff are the kindest we've met- so helpful, he went out of his way brought us kayaks just because I mentioned it! Clean bathrooms and showers, and easy access to amenities. The area is beautifully maintained but leaves nature where it should be. This is a find in Oklahoma. Definitely a state park you have to visit, one of the best state parks around. You and your family will love it! Perfect for everything we wanted and more!

This is one of my absolute favorite state parks ever! The spillway grabs your attention right away. Such energy ✨️ The sites are large, bathrooms and showers are roomy and clean and have AC! I was digging for Selenite right next door, and I felt like an archeologist. The drive through the marshlands was beautiful and serene. Hiking on forest trails can't be beat. It's a great change of pace from every other park. Highly recommend 💚

My grandson and I came here and had a lot of fun digging. We had 2 holes. Have to dig pretty deep 18”-24”. The further out, the better and closer to the surface the crystals are. You will get dirty. Bring a big shovel, smaller shovels, something to kneel on, bucket for crystals, drinking water and water to rinse your hands. We brought our wagon and it helped a ton with hauling everything to the dig site. We both give this thumbs up. 😊

Despite what older reviews might say, the cabins now have showers, toilets, and running water. The cabin was clean and air conditioned. Bring food, because the nearest restaurants are half an hour away. Cutlery, pots, and pans are not provided, but there is a stove and microwave.
