Green Mountain/Hapgood Pond
Overview
Hapgood Pond Recreation Area offers a tranquil retreat within the Green Mountain National Forest near Peru, Vermont. As the first parcel of land purchased for this historic national forest, the park holds a special place in New England’s conservation history. Visitors are greeted by a lush, wooded environment that surrounds a serene 28-acre pond, providing a quintessential mountain escape for travelers seeking peace and quiet away from the hustle of modern life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the heart of southern Vermont, the park is characterized by its dense hardwood canopy and rolling mountain terrain. The campsite sits at an elevation that keeps the air crisp and refreshing, even during the peak of summer. The surrounding forest is home to diverse wildlife and offers a secluded atmosphere, yet the park remains accessible to the charming village of Peru, providing a perfect balance of wilderness and local culture.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic destination designed for those who appreciate a back-to-basics experience. While there are no utility hookups, the park provides essential features for a comfortable stay:

- A sandy swimming beach and grassy picnic area for day-use activities.

For more adventurous hikers, the famous Long Trail and Appalachian Trail are just a short drive away. Nearby, Bromley Mountain offers seasonal activities like alpine sliding and skiing, while the town of Manchester provides world-class shopping and dining. On-site, the pond is ideal for non-motorized boating, such as canoeing or kayaking, in a strictly quiet environment.
Who This Park Is Best For
Hapgood Pond is ideal for RVers who prefer dry camping and want to fully unplug from digital distractions. Because of the narrow roads and heavily wooded sites, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs and camper vans. Travelers who prioritize natural beauty and quietude over resort-style amenities will find this park to be a refreshing sanctuary. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to introduce children to the joys of forest exploration and simple lakeside living.

Every time I go to camp, I always end up here. It’s cheap plus beautiful nature with a pond and a mile hiking trail. Of course there are free hot shower. If you want to avoid crowd, better reserve here.

Had an awesome time camping for a friend's birthday here. The camp host, Shannon, kept the campground in fantastic conditions. It was truly the cleanest campground I’ve been to - from the spotless bathrooms, to the clean campsites, to the lack of goose poop by the pond because she went as far as to clean it up so that guests can have a fun, worry-free time. Truly cannot recommend enough. I hope to be back here to camp!

Camped for one night. Really enjoyed the campsite. Nice little pond for swimming that is open to non campers for $5 a car. Nice little 1 mile loop around the pond.
