Greene-Sullivan State Forest
Overview
Greene-Sullivan State Forest is a unique outdoor destination in Southwestern Indiana, encompassing over 9,000 acres of reclaimed land. Once a mining area, it has been transformed into a lush landscape featuring more than 120 lakes. This state forest offers a quiet, rugged escape for RVers who enjoy being surrounded by water and dense woodlands. It is managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and maintains a peaceful, back-to-nature atmosphere that contrasts with high-traffic commercial resorts, making it a prime spot for fishing and solitude.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Dugger, Indiana, the forest spans across Greene and Sullivan counties. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills and deep strip pit lakes created by former mining operations. The surrounding area is primarily rural, offering vast expanses of greenery and a sense of isolation that is hard to find in more developed regions. Its proximity to the town of Linton provides easy access to basic supplies while keeping visitors immersed in the Indiana wilderness and away from the noise of major highways.
Amenities & Park Features
The park offers diverse camping options, though the Narrow Lake Campground is the primary choice for RVers, featuring several electric hookup sites. While the facilities are rustic, providing vault toilets and seasonal water fill stations, the draw is the proximity to the shoreline. Many campsites offer direct views of the water, making it a premier spot for lakeside RV camping. Be prepared for a more primitive experience without on-site sewer hookups, emphasizing a true boondocking-lite style of travel that focuses on the natural environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the main attraction here, with many lakes stocked with trout, bass, and bluegill. Boating is popular, though most lakes are restricted to electric trolling motors, ensuring a quiet environment. Beyond the water, there are miles of horseback riding trails and hiking paths to explore. For those interested in local history, the nearby town of Dugger offers a glimpse into Indiana's mining heritage, while the Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area is just a short drive away, offering world-class birdwatching opportunities.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for anglers and nature photographers who want to wake up steps away from the water. It caters to self-contained RVers who prefer quiet, wooded settings over organized activities or resort amenities. If you are looking for a rustic retreat where the focus is on stars, campfires, and peaceful mornings by the lake, Greene-Sullivan State Forest is an excellent choice. It is particularly well-suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs navigating the winding forest roads and scenic lakeside pull-ins.

Great fishing spot. Seldom on a lake with anyone else.

Watched the eclipse standing in this park. It was an amazing event and the park was the best place to relax and wait for the event.

Close to 159 so noisy when cars go by but otherwise super peaceful. Cabins on Narrow Lake are great. No shower houses so won't be returning. Also lake has so much moss buildup around the banks so you can't even fish in the area. People also had pets at cabins so the no pet policy isn't enforced I suppose. I repeat, NO SHOWERHOUSES. 😡
