Greenhorn Mountain (Kern County Park)

Overview

Greenhorn Mountain Park offers a refreshing high-altitude retreat located within the Sequoia National Forest. As a Kern County managed facility, it provides a rustic getaway for travelers looking to escape the summer heat of the California valleys. The park is defined by its serene atmosphere and deep connection to the natural landscape, making it a peaceful base for exploring the rugged beauty of the southern Sierra Nevada mountains. This is a place where the scent of pine replaces city smog and the pace of life slows down significantly.

Location & Surroundings

Perched at an elevation of approximately 6,100 feet, the park is situated in the community of Alta Sierra. The drive to the campground involves winding mountain roads that offer stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks and steep canyons. Visitors are treated to a lush environment filled with towering ponderosa pines and fir trees, which provide a thick canopy and a true sense of wilderness isolation far removed from urban noise and light pollution.

Amenities & Park Features

This park is designed for those who appreciate a more traditional camping experience. It features dry camping sites without electric or water hookups, meaning RVers should arrive prepared for off-grid living. The park facilities focus on the essentials for mountain comfort:

  • Vault toilets located conveniently throughout the camping loops.
  • Individual sites featuring heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables.
  • Ample natural shade and privacy provided by the dense forest growth.

The lack of modern utility connections ensures that the natural quiet of the forest remains the primary attraction for every visitor during their stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore nearby, starting with the numerous hiking trails that weave through the Greenhorn Mountains. A short drive away, visitors can marvel at ancient trees at the Trail of 100 Giants. For those interested in water activities, the descent toward Lake Isabella provides opportunities for fishing and boating, while the nearby Kern River offers world-class whitewater rafting experiences for adventurous travelers looking for an adrenaline rush.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer a boondocking style over luxury resort amenities. Because of the narrow access roads and tight turns, it is best suited for small to mid-sized rigs rather than large motorhomes. It is a perfect match for nature photographers and mountain bikers seeking direct access to rugged terrain, as well as families looking for a simple, unplugged forest experience in the cool mountain air.

Peaceful place. The cabins had a bit of a steep climb, but I got some good exercise.

A beautiful campground in the hills near the Kern River. Our group camp up for 3 nights to escape the heat down in the valley. The campground sits around 6000 feet so it's easily 20 degrees cooler than down below. The campground has flush toilets and hot showers. The campground doesn't see too many visitors and is a little gem in the hills. I'll definitely come back!
