Grizzly Park at Howard Prairie Lake (Jackson County Park)

Overview

Grizzly Park at Howard Prairie Lake offers a premium camping experience within the rugged beauty of the Southern Oregon Cascades. Managed by Jackson County, this facility serves as a gateway to high-altitude recreation while maintaining the comforts modern RVers expect. Visitors are treated to stunning views of the surrounding mountains and easy access to one of the region's most popular bodies of water. It is a destination where the natural mountain environment meets well-maintained infrastructure.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, the park is located southeast of the Central Point and Ashland areas. The landscape is defined by expansive pine forests and the shimmering surface of Howard Prairie Lake. Because of its height, the air remains crisp even during the peak of summer, offering a refreshing escape from the heat of the Rogue Valley below. The surrounding wilderness provides a serene backdrop that feels a world away from the city.

Amenities & Park Features

What sets Grizzly Park apart from many other mountain campgrounds is its inclusion of full hookup RV sites. Most sites feature 50-amp service, sewer, and water connections, allowing for a comfortable stay in a rustic setting. The park includes paved pads and many spacious pull-through sites designed to accommodate larger rigs. On-site facilities like clean restrooms, showers, and laundry services ensure that guests have everything they need for extended stays deep in the Cascades.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is Howard Prairie Lake, famous for its trout and bass fishing and excellent sailing opportunities. A nearby marina and boat ramp provide easy water access for those bringing their own vessels. Beyond the water, the area is a hub for hikers, with sections of the Pacific Crest Trail located within a short drive. For a change of pace, the cultural hub of Ashland is accessible for those wanting to explore the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who want a best-of-both-worlds experience. It appeals to boaters and anglers who spend their days on the water but prefer returning to an RV with full utilities. It is also an excellent choice for family campers looking for a safe, scenic environment where guests can enjoy nature without leaving the convenience of a modern, well-managed county park system.

Campground is closed. Sign is covered, I think the county is shutting it down. Oh, well, plenty of room at the resort campground two miles away.
