Gros Morne/Shallow Bay

Overview

Located at the northern edge of the iconic Gros Morne National Park, Shallow Bay Campground offers a coastal retreat unlike any other in Newfoundland. Managed by Parks Canada, this site provides a serene environment where the boreal forest meets the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is particularly famous for its proximity to Shallow Bay Beach, a sprawling stretch of sand that invites long walks and evening sunsets. This park serves as a tranquil base for those wishing to explore the rugged beauty of the Great Northern Peninsula while staying in a natural, protected setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the picturesque community of Cow Head, NL, the park is nestled within a diverse landscape of coastal dunes and tuckamore forests. The surroundings are characterized by the dramatic scenery of the Long Range Mountains to the east and the expansive waters of the gulf to the west. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a region known for its unique geology and vibrant local culture. The area is a prime spot for viewing migratory shorebirds and enjoying the refreshing sea breeze that defines the Newfoundland coast.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for various types of campers, offering both serviced and unserviced sites. Key amenities include water and electrical hookups for RVs, though travelers should confirm site lengths for larger rigs. The park features clean washrooms with flush toilets, hot showers, and several kitchen shelters for communal cooking. Families often appreciate the on-site playground and the convenient dump station located near the exit. Fire pits are available at most sites, allowing for classic campfire evenings under the vast, unpolluted northern sky.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors are perfectly positioned to enjoy the renowned Western Brook Pond boat tour, which is just a short drive away. In the town of Cow Head, the Gros Morne Theatre Festival provides high-quality local performances during the summer months. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Coastal Trail, a scenic path perfect for hiking or biking along the shoreline. Additionally, the sandy beach at Shallow Bay is ideal for swimming during the warmer weeks or searching for driftwood and sea glass after a tide change.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and families who prioritize scenery and outdoor recreation over high-end resort amenities. Shallow Bay campground is located at the end of the town of Cow head. The park is clean and quiet. Electrical and water hookups available but book in advance. Facilities are spotless and showers were hot. The beech at this campground is beautiful. Can easily burn a few hours on this beech.

Lovely beach to visit in Gros Morne National Park. You will enjoy walking all along the beach. It is clean and there's washrooms, playground and lot of parking space. Watching sunrise/sunset is absolutely magic there! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

What a beautiful clean beach! Lovely white sand stretches around the cove and the water was comfortable enough to swim in. Although I only had time to safe. It's worth a stop. They are renovating the building on site but one bathroom is open.
