Guadalupe Mountains/Pine Springs

Overview

Pine Springs Campground serves as a primary basecamp for those exploring the rugged beauty of Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Located near the park’s main entrance in Salt Flat, this site offers a primitive camping experience that emphasizes the natural surroundings of the Chihuahuan Desert. It is a paved area designed for simplicity, making it a reliable choice for travelers who prioritize proximity to world-class hiking over resort-style luxuries.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Salt Flat, TX, the park sits at the base of dramatic limestone cliffs and the famous El Capitan peak. The surrounding landscape is characterized by high-desert flora and sweeping mountain vistas that change color with the setting sun. Because of its elevation at nearly 5,800 feet, visitors can expect cooler temperatures than the surrounding desert floor, though the area remains exposed to the elements and frequent high winds common to this region.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a dry camping facility, meaning there are no hookups for water, sewer, or electricity. RVers must rely on their onboard systems while utilizing the paved parking pads provided. The site includes access to flush toilets and potable water located near the visitor center trailhead. Each site features a sturdy picnic table, but the park maintains a strict policy against wood fires to protect the sensitive desert ecosystem.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main draw for staying at Pine Springs is its direct access to the Guadalupe Peak Trail, which leads to the highest point in Texas. For those seeking a less strenuous outing, the Smith Spring Loop offers a glimpse of desert oases. A short drive away, visitors can explore the stunning McKittrick Canyon, known for its vibrant foliage, or venture across the border into New Mexico to visit the famous Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and dedicated hikers who want to wake up exactly at the trailhead. It suits self-contained RVers who are comfortable with boondocking and value a quiet, dark-sky environment for exceptional stargazing. If you prefer a rustic atmosphere where the wind and the mountains are your primary entertainment, this stopover provides an authentic connection to the wild landscape of West Texas.

No showers, no electric hook up, not really set up for an RV other than a place to park. Beautiful views and hiking.

Amazing experience. Working water, 2 different restrooms available. Only thing to mention is the amount of gnats, other than that definitely worth the trip.

We stayed in our truck-trailer, not the tents. The parking lot is a great location for hiking and centralized for the park as well. Location is 5-stars. The 'campground' is mediocre, at best. Everyone is parked on top of each other. I set out our game cameras out the back into the tree line and the only thing I caught was our neighbor peeing in the middle of the night. The walk to the restroom is less than 1-minute. Good restrooms and a dishwashing station as well.

The RV campground isn't bad. Since many of the tent sites are first come first serve it's worth a look if you can sleep in your car, van or small RV. No electric hook ups and it does get cold at night (March for us) so pack warm clothes and heaters if you can power them.

Had a great time here. We spent one night tent camping- super well maintained camp sites, great views, easy to park and get space from other campers. Super peaceful. Second night we stayed in the truck in the RV lot- if you’re parking there, just know that it’s a parking lot! But views out the back are delightful, you’re right near the bathrooms and water fill station, and it was quiet.
