Gunnison/Dinner Station
Overview
Dinner Station Campground provides a genuine mountain escape within the vast Gunnison National Forest. Situated at an elevation of approximately 9,400 feet, this park offers a rustic camping experience surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Sawatch Range. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the rugged beauty of the Almont area. Historically, the site served as a stopping point for stagecoaches, and today it continues to provide a restful haven for modern travelers exploring the Colorado high country.
Location & Surroundings
The park is nestled along the banks of the Taylor River, just a short drive from the expansive Taylor Park Reservoir. The terrain is characterized by lodgepole pine forests and open sagebrush meadows, providing a scenic mix of sun and shade throughout the day. Travelers will find themselves in a high-alpine environment where the air is crisp and the night skies are exceptionally clear. This makes the area a prime spot for stargazing and wildlife viewing, with frequent sightings of mule deer and elk in the surrounding forest.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities focus on the essentials of outdoor living. Visitors have access to the following features:
- Clean and well-maintained vault toilets conveniently located near the campsites.
- Potable water available via seasonal hand pumps located within the grounds.
- Individual sites equipped with sturdy picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings for evening gatherings.
There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at this location, making it a classic dry-camping destination. The sites are generally spacious, though those with very large rigs should navigate the interior access roads with care.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers will find that the surrounding area is a premier destination for off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails, with hundreds of miles of rugged paths to explore in the Taylor Park area. Anglers can enjoy world-class trout fishing in the Taylor River or head to the nearby reservoir for boating and flat-water fishing. For those who prefer hiking, the Gunnison National Forest offers numerous trails ranging from gentle meadow walks to challenging high-altitude mountain ascents near the Continental Divide, providing unmatched alpine views for all skill levels.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who value solitude and proximity to nature over modern resort luxuries. It is a favorite for motorized recreation enthusiasts and anglers who want a basecamp close to the water and major trailheads. If you are a traveler looking for a quiet, primitive setting to enjoy the great outdoors without the density and noise of commercial parks, Dinner Station is an excellent fit for your Colorado mountain adventure.

Beware of Camp host !! We drove through the campground to see our friends, We were going under 5mph. Old camp host blocked the exit with his golf cart and began to scream at us saying that we were not welcome there, our kind was not wanted there. Then he flipped us off and rolled away. He is what we do not want in Colorado !

No Usable Water. Don't be fooled by USFS Site. Pump was broken, then fixed. Water was full of silt. USFS lady laughed and said, "Who would want to drink this water." Non existent host locked women's toliet. Beautiful area but NO WATER other than the river.
