Gunnison/Mosca
Overview
Mosca Campground offers a serene and secluded escape within the heart of the Gunnison National Forest, situated conveniently near the scenic Spring Creek Reservoir. This high-elevation destination provides a classic Colorado mountain experience for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and enjoy the Great Outdoors. It serves as a much quieter, more intimate alternative to the busier sites found near Taylor Park, making it a favorite for traditional campers seeking a genuine wilderness feel during their stay in the Almont region.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled at an elevation of approximately 9,500 feet, the campground is surrounded by towering pine and aspen forests that provide both shade and privacy for visitors. The Almont area itself is famous for being the meeting point of the Taylor and Gunnison Rivers, creating a dramatic landscape of jagged granite cliffs and alpine meadows. This specific pocket of the forest is a prime spot for viewing local wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and occasional moose wandering through the lush undergrowth near the water's edge.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service facility, the site prioritizes natural preservation and a quiet environment over commercial luxuries. The park features include:
- Spacious back-in sites designed for maximum privacy between neighbors.
- Sturdy picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings at every location.
- Access to potable water provided via seasonal hand pumps.
- Clean and well-maintained vault toilets centrally located for convenience.
While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites, the facility is perfectly suited for self-contained RVs seeking peaceful mountain solitude away from the usual highway noise and crowds.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreation nearby. Popular activities in the immediate area include:
- Fishing and paddling at Spring Creek Reservoir, located just a short distance away.
- High-altitude hiking and mountain biking on a vast network of local forest trails.
- OHV and 4x4 exploration through the rugged and scenic backcountry.
Additionally, the world-class fly fishing opportunities on the Taylor River are just a short drive down the canyon, offering some of the best trout waters in Colorado for dedicated anglers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is perfectly suited for boondockers and self-reliant travelers who value bright stars and forest silence over resort-style amenities. It is an ideal fit for smaller to medium-sized RVs and camper vans that can comfortably navigate forest service roads. If you want an authentic basecamp to explore the regions between Crested Butte and Gunnison while staying immersed in the wild, this location offers the perfect rugged retreat for your next mountain adventure.

I went here a couple of years ago. The whole area (to Taylor Lake) was taken over by atv's and dirt bikes. Paid for 2 nights, stayed 1. If you want peace and quiet and to see wildlife don't go here. People that weren't staying at Mosca CG were pulling in to use the toilet. If you're into ATV's and dirt bikes, it's probably your kind of area.

Great little campground that we found space in on July 4th weekend. It was quiet and beautiful with lake access. The lake is low but still fishable. Picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets that were clean and not stinky! The road is a little rough but can be accessed by 2 WD. Highly recommend!
