Gwillim Lake
Overview
Gwillim Lake Provincial Park offers a serene escape into the foothills of the Northern Rocky Mountains. Nestled along the southern shores of its namesake lake, this destination provides a truly rustic wilderness experience for RVers looking to disconnect from the modern world. The park is characterized by its deep, crystal-clear waters and lush forests of spruce, pine, and aspen, creating a peaceful backdrop for those exploring the Peace River region. It serves as a perfect home base for outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a natural, quiet setting away from the bustle of major highways.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 56 kilometers southeast of Chetwynd, British Columbia, the park is easily accessible via Highway 29. The surrounding landscape features the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountain foothills, offering dramatic views and diverse ecosystems. The lake itself is the centerpiece, carved out by ancient glacial activity and surrounded by rolling hills and dense boreal forest. Travelers will find the drive incredibly scenic, with frequent opportunities to spot local wildlife such as moose, elk, or bears along the roadway before arriving at the sheltered, forested campsites.
Amenities & Park Features
As a provincial park, the facilities here favor a traditional, back-to-basics camping style. There are no hookups available, making it ideal for self-contained RV units capable of dry camping. Each campsite is nestled in the trees for privacy and includes a picnic table and fire ring. The park provides several essential features for visitors:
- Hand-pumped well water and pit toilets
- Onsite playground and sandy beach
- Concrete boat launch for lake access
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own potable water as the well water may require treatment before consumption. The sites are large enough to accommodate various rig sizes, though big-rig owners should navigate the forested loops carefully to ensure a smooth setup.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water-based recreation is the primary draw at Gwillim Lake. The lake is well-known for excellent fishing opportunities, with anglers regularly catching northern pike and lake trout. A concrete boat launch makes it easy to get motorized or non-motorized vessels into the water for a day of exploring the shoreline. For those who prefer land, the Gwillim Lake Trail offers a scenic hiking route through the forest with viewpoints overlooking the water. Additionally, the nearby town of Tumbler Ridge provides access to UNESCO Global Geopark sites and impressive waterfalls just a short drive away.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for travelers who enjoy off-grid dry camping and want to immerse themselves in nature. It is a fantastic choice for fishing enthusiasts and families looking for a classic summer lake experience. Because there are no power or water connections, it attracts RVers who value solitude and a slower pace over resort-style amenities. If you are looking for a picturesque mountain retreat where the sound of the wind through the pines replaces city noise, this is the spot for you. It is a true haven for those seeking the authentic North.

Fabulous beach area, nice and quiet fr a day trip. Great for paddle boarding and kayaking, although power boats are welcome. Great docks.

Cooler weather. Lake gets rough quick with the wind. Nice campground. No cell service

Went to the boat launch while on a job, had some time to burn...beautiful scenery, water was kinda chilly but I would have jumped in anyway if I wasn't in my coveralls. Good stuff

We had Gwillim on our 3 lakes in 3 days long weekend in August 2020. For boat owners there is a concrete launch, and a very nice dock. Point of fact when you can see wind turbines on a ridge above the lake it would indicate that wind is going to be a factor more often then not.

What a great campground. Crystal clear water, falls not far away, hiking trails, boat launch, nice clean campground. The people are friendly.
