Hammonasset Beach
Overview
Hammonasset Beach State Park stands as Connecticut's largest shoreline park, offering over two miles of sandy beach on Long Island Sound. The William F. Miller Campground within the park provides an expansive space for RVers to enjoy the ocean breeze and natural beauty. This destination is well-regarded for its combination of coastal recreation and preserved salt marshes, making it a staple for regional travelers. It transitions seamlessly from a daytime beach retreat to a peaceful evening coastal camp under the stars.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled in the charming town of Madison, CT, the park is easily accessible via I-95, making it a convenient stop for those touring the New England coast. The surrounding environment is defined by the Long Island Sound and the extensive tidal marshes that provide a haven for migratory birds. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a classic Connecticut shoreline setting, characterized by gentle waves, rocky outcrops, and refreshing salt air that creates a distinct sense of place far from the urban bustle of the Northeast corridor.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features over 500 sites, including several loops specifically designed for RVs with electric and water hookups. Modern restrooms and hot showers are strategically placed throughout the camping loops, and multiple dump stations are available for convenience. Beyond the sites, the park offers a scenic boardwalk, paved paths for biking, and the popular Meigs Point Nature Center, which provides educational exhibits about the local ecosystem and marine life found along the Connecticut coast, including interactive touch tanks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can spend their days swimming, saltwater fishing, or kayaking along the shore. The nature center is a must-visit for families, featuring interpretive programs that highlight local wildlife. For those looking to explore beyond the sand, the historic town of Madison offers boutique shopping and local dining. Additionally, the nearby Clinton Crossing Premium Outlets provide a different pace of entertainment, while various local preserves offer further hiking and birdwatching opportunities just a short drive away from the main gates.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal fit for family vacationers who want a traditional beach camping experience without the complexity of a high-priced private resort. It also appeals strongly to nature lovers and birdwatchers drawn to the diverse coastal habitats found in the salt marshes. Because of its large size and straightforward layout, it is well-suited for big-rig travelers looking for easy coastal access. If you value direct access to the water and a spacious, natural environment, Hammonasset is a perfect match for your next trip.

The beach is very clean and tidy. It is also good for family to go there and picnic. There is a good beach, spending time on the beach is also a nice way to spend time. There is a good trail along the beach which goes to a height from where the view of the beach is nice.

This was a busy beach when we went on a Saturday afternoon. There were a lot of people sunbathing but nobody in the water that day. They have clean restrooms with a large covered pavilion. You can also walk on the trails along the beach. I was told by a close friend that the lagoon across the beach is a great place for bird watching too. There were a lot of birds flying around when we were there.

The water was nice and warm very clear path on beach even with clutter of other guests. There are changing rooms in rinsing off stations as you exit the beach plus a small little bistro quick grab snacks. Plenty of parking spaces with multiple lots available plus there is a shuttle service offered for the campers

One of a kind park with camping and exquisite beaches, and best of all CT car plates get in for free. Their little museum is full of live animals too, so cool! The hiking trail at the very end is the gem though, beyond words how beautiful!

I was not aware of the fact that CT has such a beautiful, huge state park. Nicely maintained, clean, plenty of camping and picnic area. Like East Beach than the West beach because the East Beach was comparatively less chaotic. People were fishing happily. The cute museum in the parking was an additional attraction for any age of people.
