Overview

Hanmore Lake Campground offers a tranquil escape into the heart of Smoky Lake County, Alberta. Split into two distinct areas, Campground A and Campground B, this destination is defined by its lush boreal forest setting and immediate access to the water. It provides a classic, rustic camping experience that emphasizes a connection with nature over modern luxuries. Visitors often appreciate the quiet atmosphere and the opportunity to unplug in a well-maintained, natural environment that captures the essence of central Alberta.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of the town of Smoky Lake, the park sits along the scenic shores of Hanmore Lake. The landscape is characterized by dense tree cover, providing ample privacy and shade for individual campsites. The lake itself is a centerpiece for the region, known for its sandy beach area and calm waters, making it a popular spot for both locals and travelers exploring the parklands. The surrounding terrain is relatively flat, making it easy to navigate for various RV sizes.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a dry-camping facility focused on traditional outdoor living. Each site is equipped with a sturdy fire pit and a heavy-duty picnic table to facilitate evening campfires. While there are no power or water hookups, the park provides clean pit toilets and a hand pump for non-potable water needs. Families frequently utilize the on-site playground, and the conveniently located boat launch serves as a primary hub for those looking to spend their day on the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the shoreline, guests can explore the famous Iron Horse Trail, which is perfect for hiking, cycling, or off-road vehicle use. A short drive into the town of Smoky Lake allows visitors to experience the Pumpkin Capital of the World, especially during the annual harvest festivities. Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake providing consistent opportunities for landing northern pike and perch directly from a boat or the community pier.

Who This Park Is Best For

Hanmore Lake is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking-style stays without sacrificing a sense of community. It is a wonderful choice for families looking for a safe, lakeside environment where children can play on the beach. Hanmore West campground was amazing the lake is breathtaking the lots are very clean and spacious the staff are amazing and very prompt with daily service of wood and ice. Every one ( campers ) were very respectful friendly and helpful when it came to quiet time and the use of their generators and what’s available in the town if you needed anything. We’ve been at East Side Camp Ground several times. Always clean, quiet and the water is clear. Not to mention good fishing and nice beach area and park. The only thing that could be better is to have showers. Note: there is no power but well worth it! Love this place.

We had a great time camping at Hanmore. We were in the group site for the weekend. It is a great site with lots of room. The lake is awesome, although the second day the kids had swimmwers itch. The floating dock provides a lot of fun for the kids. A little bridge over the mud on the path to the lake would be very helpful. The staff were helpful and friendly.

We used the day use area yesterday and we’re thrilled with this location. It was clean and clearly well taken care of. (Also we witnessed this as we saw staff come change out garbages) The water was high on the lake so the beach/sand area was quite small but still enough area for kids to play. We definitely will be back!
