Hannen Park (Benton County Park)

Overview

Hannen Park is a centerpiece of Benton County's conservation system, offering a tranquil escape into the heart of the Iowa countryside. Centered around a beautiful 45-acre lake, this destination provides a balanced blend of traditional camping and essential modern conveniences. The park maintains a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of nature replace the hum of highway traffic, making it a favorite for travelers who appreciate the slower pace of rural life.

Location & Surroundings

Located just southwest of Blairstown, IA, the park is nestled within the rolling agricultural landscapes and wooded pockets characteristic of the region. The wooded shoreline and restored prairies within the 180-acre park boundary create a secluded feel despite being easily accessible from local routes. Visitors often enjoy the dark night skies and the abundance of local wildlife, including white-tailed deer and various migratory waterfowl that frequent the water's edge.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to RV travelers with electric hookups and spacious sites that can accommodate a variety of rig sizes. While providing a rustic and natural experience, the park includes a modern shower building and clean restrooms for guest comfort. Primary features of the park include:

  • A boat ramp and a designated swimming beach for summer recreation.
  • Several picnic shelters and a playground for family gatherings.
  • Miles of well-maintained hiking trails through timber and prairie.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a primary draw at Hannen Park, with the lake well-stocked for largemouth bass and bluegill enthusiasts. For those looking to explore beyond the park boundaries, the city of Cedar Rapids is a short drive away, offering diverse cultural attractions and dining. Closer to home, the small town of Blairstown provides a charming look at Iowa community life, and the nearby Cedar River offers additional opportunities for paddling and scenic drives through the lush river valley.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for nature-focused families and retirees looking for a quiet, budget-friendly retreat. It is best suited for travelers who prefer self-contained RVing or a more traditional camping experience over luxury resort amenities. If you enjoy peaceful lakefront views and the simplicity of a well-kept county conservation area, Hannen Park offers a refreshing and scenic alternative to busy commercial campgrounds.

Great place to camp and fish. It went down hill for a few years but it's really making a comeback lately.

This place is on its way to being 5 stars. I hadn't seen this place for 26 years due to moving away from the area. Before I moved away, I frequented the beach here nearly every day & camped here a handful of times. Since I was there last, the park has gotten or at least seems to have gotten much larger & more campsites have been added & you can now drive all the way around the lake instead of having to access both entrances at the front of the park. I was disappointed to see that the beach area has been cut in half as a well as the roped off area where you are aloud to swim. The parking for the beach has also been cut down to 1/3 the size it used to be & there is a large steel building going up where you once used to park & where the shower house used to be. The park is kept up pretty nice throughout the park. A building has been added on the campground host site & it is being used to house a fridge & chest freezer where they are going to sell ice, & firewood. The host is positioned right across from the beach & last time I was there, this was not here. I was happy to see there is a campground host at this park now. It is so nice that this position has been added too. Always there to help & answer any questions that campers may have. This park is more beautiful than I remember it being ever so Great Work Guy's & Host.
