Harding Lake
Overview
Harding Lake State Recreation Area is a cornerstone of outdoor life in Interior Alaska. Established in 1967, it provides a sprawling natural retreat for RVers looking to experience the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness. This park centers around one of the largest lakes in the region, offering a serene escape framed by lush forests. It serves as a premier recreation hub where travelers can immerse themselves in the quiet rhythms of the North.
Location & Surroundings
Situated 45 miles southeast of Fairbanks near the community of Salcha, the park is easily accessible via the Richardson Highway. The lake itself is a massive body of water surrounded by dense stands of birch and spruce trees. The landscape offers a classic Alaskan aesthetic, providing a peaceful buffer from the highway. Visitors often enjoy the expansive shoreline and the transition from rugged boreal forest to clear, deep waters.
Amenities & Park Features
While the park leans toward a rustic experience, it provides essential facilities for self-contained RVers. There are approximately 90 campsites, including large pull-through sites designed to accommodate bigger rigs. While there are no electrical hookups, the park provides:
- A convenient RV dump station for waste management.
- Potable water available through several hand pumps located in the camping loops.
- A large boat launch and multiple picnic shelters for day use.
These features ensure that even without full hookups, visitors have the necessities for a comfortable lakeside stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities are the primary draw here, with the lake being popular for boating and jet skiing. Anglers frequent the waters for Northern Pike and Lake Trout, while the swimming beach is a favorite during the summer. For those who prefer land-based adventures, there are trails that wind through the forest. Just a short drive away, the Tanana River offers additional fishing, while nearby Fairbanks provides access to cultural museums and local shopping.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for boating enthusiasts and families seeking a traditional summer lake experience. Because the park offers dry camping, it is best suited for RVers who enjoy a more primitive, self-sufficient stay amidst nature. It is a fantastic choice for those traveling between Delta Junction and Fairbanks who want to trade the pavement for scenic lakeside views and a relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere in the Alaskan heartland.

Nice campground designed for trailers and campers. Decent tree shade and picnic tables/fire pits at every campsite. Firewood stacked up around the area. Campground has an RV dump by the field, very convenient.

Nice campground. Only issue was the water at the dump station contaminated our system with dirty water. Plugged my external filter as well. There was a boil notice but not for muddy water.

Recently attended my niece's beautiful outdoor wedding and reception at Harding Lake. It is a lovely recreation area.

Very nice rustic campground. We had the entire place to ourselves which added to the romance of the place. I think very under utilized campground! Clean rest rooms. Nice rustic sites with beautiful trees all around. Many different sites : bigger , short, long , shaded, sunny. Some nice secluded walk in tent sites …. But bring a hand cart to carry yiur stuff back to the sites! Its a 1/4 mile walk back to them!
