Harlan County Lake - COE/Methodist Cove

Overview

Methodist Cove is a premier destination located on the north shore of Harlan County Lake. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park provides a relaxed atmosphere for those who appreciate the vast landscapes of south-central Nebraska. It serves as a central hub for outdoor enthusiasts looking to enjoy the state's second-largest reservoir, offering a thoughtful blend of developed amenities and the rugged, unhurried beauty of the Great Plains.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of Alma, Nebraska, the park is nestled within the scenic Republican River valley. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills, native prairie grasses, and the expansive blue horizon of the 13,000-acre lake. Its proximity to US-183 makes it an accessible stop for travelers crossing the region, yet the park remains secluded enough to offer quiet nights and unobstructed views of the Nebraska stars away from city lights.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 100 campsites, many of which are equipped with 50-amp electrical hookups to accommodate modern RVs of various sizes. Visitors have access to essential facilities that make a long stay comfortable, including modern shower houses, flush toilets, and a conveniently located dump station. For those bringing watercraft, the park provides well-maintained boat ramps and a dedicated fish cleaning station, ensuring a seamless transition from the water to the dinner table.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the massive lake, which is regionally famous for its walleye and white bass fishing. Beyond the water, the area is a haven for birdwatchers, especially during migration seasons when bald eagles and American white pelicans frequent the shoreline. The nearby town of Alma offers a charming small-town experience with local diners and a public golf course, while the lake’s extensive shoreline provides ample space for hiking, beach combing, and sunset photography.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for avid anglers and boaters who prioritize direct access to high-quality water recreation and functional facilities. It is also a fantastic choice for families seeking an affordable, nature-focused getaway where the environment serves as the main entertainment. RVers who prefer the reliable standards and spacious layouts of a COE managed park over a crowded commercial resort will find the tranquility here perfectly suited to their travel style.

Beautifully maintained. Plenty of room between sites. Only $15 with the beautiful America pass.

Generally, non-electric sites are an afterthought in campgrounds not at Methodist Cove. The sites were level and spacious with one loop looking over the lake. I will definitely come again.

I was gonna skip shower, glad I didn't. Went for motorcycle ride Republican City Etc. Believe it or not, that Frieda's shop is still going, so too with Fat Willy's cafe. When I got into the shower, I chose one of the larger ones. The only thing not working the 2 big control knobs were hard to turn . One adjusted knob amount of water going to each shower head, one up high other at waste height. The other knob regulates water temp, going to each shower head. If you took your time, you could dial them in perfectly. Just thought I would say thanks to Army Corps of Engineers.

C.O.E. Parks are great for us because my spouse is blind and the spots are nice and flat and expansive. Plus we get a camping discount because of her disability pass. Would have given this park 5 stars, but they are a little overbearing about parking on the grass and taking ATVs off the trailer, but still not riding it.

Very roomy campground. Level gravel lots. Some non-electric, some electric only, and also full hookups. Also had a dump station with a rinsing hose. Has a few potable fresh water areas as well. Lots of shade trees. Paved walking path nearby. Marina nearby. Restroom/Shower house with a washer and a dryer. Very clean and well maintained campground. Camp custodian onsite. Lake is right there. Everyone has view of it! Highly recommend.
